Literacy: 

The Lorax

This fortnight in Writing, our Year 2 students have been inspired by The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. We explored the important themes of sustainability and conservation, discussing how our choices can help protect the environment for future generations. Students also examined the characters in the story, identifying their traits, motivations and actions before creating detailed character descriptions using rich vocabulary. It has been wonderful to see students combine thoughtful ideas about caring for our world with descriptive writing that brings characters to life.

Maths:

In Mathematics, our focus has been on developing our understanding of multiplication. Students have been exploring how equal groups can be represented using arrays, building and drawing rows and columns to help visualise multiplication problems. We have been learning to describe arrays using multiplication sentences and connecting these representations to repeated addition. Students have enjoyed using hands-on materials and practical activities to develop their understanding and build confidence with multiplication. 

We have now shifted our focus to subtraction, exploring a range of strategies to help us solve subtraction problems efficiently and confidently. Students have been using number lines to visualise subtraction, learning to count backwards and use jumps to find the difference between numbers. We are developing our understanding of how number lines can help us solve problems and explain the strategies we use.
