Physical Education
This term, in P- 2, we have worked on our kicking skills with round balls and will transition to punting with round and oval shaped balls. The Grade 3/4's have enjoyed developing their AFL skills and will apply them in AFL 9's games in the coming weeks. The 5/6's will begin their next sports unit which will be Softball.
In the sporting world, I have been hosting many lunchtime and sports session trials to ensure all students are able to showcase and demonstrate their abilities in each Athletic event and I can finalise the Bittern Athletics team. Once I have finished these sessions and recorded each event, I will award ribbons and post the results in the newsletter.
In Health we have been learning about the impacts of added salt and sugar to our foods, including reading the Nutrition Information panel. We have compared like products using the 100g column and made healthier swaps with like products. The students also learned that Chocolate Milk is loaded with more sugar than a soft drink and that sodium is in a lot of products that aren't really that salty. It's been great to hear their discussions and debates over which foods have more salt or sugar when ordering them.
In the garden, we have created a compost garden bed which was a team effort collecting all the parts of the layers and in the kitchen we've made rice paper rolls which turned out to be delicious!
P-2 Performing Arts has been fun! We've started by learning about the elements of dance, including levels, speed and the shapes we can create with our bodies. We have also learned / practised dances such as the Macarena, Hokey Pokey, YMCA and the chicken dance. We also did the Polka which made for a whole lot of chaos but in the best way. The students are fully engaged in the sessions and are bringing their best moves to the class.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language)
It has been another busy and exciting time in Auslan, with students across the school continuing to build their signing skills, vocabulary and understanding of Deaf culture and experiences.
Our Prep/1 students have been learning to sign the much-loved picture storybook: There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly. Students have been learning the signs for the different characters and objects in the story and putting these together as they practise signing along with the text. We have also discussed some of the challenges that Deaf and hard-of-hearing people may experience in everyday life. Students have considered questions such as: How might a Deaf person know that someone is at their front door? How might they be alerted during an emergency? These discussions are helping students understand how visual alerts, flashing lights and other technologies can make environments more accessible.
Our Grade 2 students have continued working their way through the My Emotions book, developing their ability to communicate an increasingly complex range of feelings in Auslan. Recently, students have been learning signs including bored, distracted, curious and confused. They are also developing their understanding of how facial expression and body language are important parts of communicating meaning in Auslan.
The Grade 3/4 students have continued exploring signs for objects and features found around the home. They have now completed their learning about the facade and exterior of a house, adding another collection of useful signs to their growing Auslan vocabulary.
Our Grade 5/6 students have continued the challenging task of unpacking and translating our Kindness Song into Auslan. Students are discovering that translating a song is not simply a matter of replacing each English word with a sign. Instead, they need to think carefully about the meaning and message behind the lyrics and consider how these ideas can be communicated clearly and naturally in Auslan. This can be a tricky process, but our senior students are doing a fantastic job working through the lyrics, discussing possible interpretations and making thoughtful decisions about the most appropriate signs to use.

Visual Arts
Our Visual Arts students have been incredibly busy over the past few weeks, putting the finishing touches on the wonderful artworks they have been developing throughout the term. It has been fantastic to see their creativity, persistence, and growing confidence as they refine their pieces and prepare them for display.
We are also very excited to be preparing for the upcoming August Art Attack, a vibrant community art show held at the Crib Point Community House. This annual exhibition celebrates local creativity and showcases artwork from artists of all ages, including a dedicated section for primary school students.

- Exhibition: Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th August, 10:00am–4:00pm

- Entry: $5 (Under 18s free)
This is a fantastic family-friendly event and a wonderful opportunity to support our young artists and celebrate the arts within our local community. We warmly invite all families to come along and enjoy the exhibition.
A huge congratulations to the following students who have been selected to have their artwork displayed in this year’s show: Spencer, Kaden, Patrick, Eleanor H., Zackeyyah, Eloise, Logan, Luna, Maya, and Alana.
Students were selected based on a range of criteria including consistent participation, effort, creativity, presentation, and a positive attitude towards learning and creating. These criteria recognise not only artistic skill, but also the commitment and care students show throughout the art-making process.
Families also have the option to enter artwork privately into the exhibition. The August Art Attack welcomes entries from community members of all ages, providing a great opportunity for students to showcase additional work.
