Experimenting with Collage!

This term, our students have been busy experimenting with collage in the art room! They have been exploring paper as a medium, discovering how it can be torn, twisted, folded, scrunched, layered, cut and manipulated to create different effects.

Through plenty of trial and error, students have been encouraged to take creative risks and explore both abstract and realistic approaches to collage. They have been thinking carefully about the elements or art, particularly shape, line, colour and texture, while discovering how layers of paper can add depth, detail and interest to their work.

Rather than focusing on the finished artwork, students have been learning that experimentation is an important part of the artistic process. It has been wonderful to see their ideas develop as they test materials, make decisions, solve problems and discover new possibilities for paper.

As their confidence has grown, students have also used their own imagination and initiative to look beyond the traditional paper collage and experiment with other materials. From found recycled materials to unexpected objects and textures, students are discovering that almost anything can become part of an artwork when they are willing to explore, experiment and think creatively!
