Year 3 Inquiry – Exploring the Branches of Science

The Year 3 students have been busy this term exploring the different branches of science as part of their Inquiry studies.

They began the unit by investigating Physics, learning about forces, pushes and pulls. Through a range of hands-on experiments, students explored how forces affect movement. They experimented with balloon rockets, investigated how ramp angles affect the speed of toy cars, and explored forces and air resistance by designing and testing paper helicopters.

In recent weeks, students have turned their attention to Space and Earth Sciences. They have explored how we experience day and night and investigated where Earth sits within our solar system.

Two weeks ago, students had the exciting opportunity to visit Scienceworks. They were fascinated by the Planetarium, where they explored the Melbourne night sky and learnt about how and why we experience the seasons. Students also enjoyed creating scientific sketches of the West Gate Bridge, carefully observing its structure and the features that make it strong.

Back at school, students have continued to build on their learning by writing recounts of their Scienceworks excursion and descriptive texts about the West Gate Bridge, combining their scientific knowledge with their literacy skills. It has been wonderful to see the students' curiosity, enthusiasm and excitement for science grow throughout the term!
