This term, the Eucalyptus children have shown a wonderful and growing interest in science, investigation and discovering how things work. We have embraced this interest through a range of hands-on experiences, including Oobleck, Mandarin in Water, Walking Water, Sink or Float and Bubble Investigations.

Science investigations provide children with opportunities to be curious, ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas and discover what happens when they change or combine things. Rather than simply being told an answer, children are encouraged to become active investigators, using their own observations and ideas to make sense of the world around them.

Through these experiences, the children have been developing a wide range of skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, early mathematical thinking, fine-motor skills and persistence. They have been learning to notice changes, compare results, use descriptive language and share their theories with others. Importantly, science investigations also encourage children to understand that it is okay when something doesn't work the way they expected. They can try again, change their thinking and learn from the process.

We have particularly enjoyed seeing how the children's interest in science has continued beyond individual experiences. Their questions, conversations and curiosity have encouraged us to continue providing opportunities for investigation, experimentation and discovery throughout the program.

During our rest and recharge time, we have begun listening to Enid Blyton's The Magic Faraway Tree through audiobooks. This journey began after a conversation with the children about movies they had watched on a holiday break, with several children sharing that they had seen The Magic Faraway Tree. This sparked interest and curiosity about the original story, leading us to introduce the children to the chapter books through audio.

So far, we have listened to the first two books and have thoroughly enjoyed following the adventures and characters. Next term, we will continue our journey with the third book.

Listening to chapter books provides rich learning opportunities for young children. Unlike a picture book where illustrations provide many visual clues, longer stories encourage children to create their own pictures and ideas in their minds as they listen. They need to imagine what the characters, places and events might look like, drawing on the descriptions and language within the story.

This ability to create mental images is an important foundation for later reading comprehension. As children grow into independent readers, they need to be able to understand and picture what they are reading, rather than simply recognising the words. Regularly listening to longer, ongoing stories also supports vocabulary, concentration, memory, listening skills, comprehension, imagination and an enjoyment of books and storytelling.

Perhaps most importantly, continuing a story over many sessions gives children the experience of becoming invested in characters and wondering what might happen next. We love hearing the children's predictions and conversations as our Magic Faraway Tree adventure continues.

The Eucalyptus group is a little different from our regular kindergarten groups, as it brings together children from all four kindergarten groups across the service. This creates a unique mixed-age and mixed-peer environment where children have opportunities to meet and build relationships with children they may not usually spend time with.

Having different children together each session creates a constantly changing group dynamic. Children have opportunities to develop new friendships, reconnect with familiar friends and explore different types of play and interests. A child who may usually choose one type of experience can discover something new when playing alongside a different group of peers.

Mixed-age groups also provide valuable opportunities for peer learning and scaffolding. Older or more experienced children can model language, ideas, skills and social strategies for younger children, while younger children can contribute their own ideas, perspectives and enthusiasm. Children learn from one another through observing, imitating, explaining, negotiating, cooperating and problem-solving together.

These experiences support children to develop confidence, independence, communication, empathy, leadership and social skills. They also give children the opportunity to experience themselves in different roles within a group sometimes as the learner, sometimes as the helper, and sometimes as the leader.

We have loved watching the Eucalyptus children grow in confidence as they navigate these changing group dynamics, form new connections and discover new possibilities with different friends.

We look forward to continuing to follow the children's interests next term, providing opportunities for curiosity, investigation, imagination, storytelling, relationships and discovery.
