CLEVER CLASS

HaSS and Literacy Focus

This term, we have been reading the book ‘Boy Overboard’ by Morris Gleitzman. It tells the story of Jamal and Bibi, a brother and sister who live in Afghanistan and love playing soccer. They need to flee their country with their family as it is no longer safe for them to stay. The story tells of their journey as refugees trying to reach Australia, and the many dangers they face on their travels. As part of our HaSS Unit on Immigration, we have been looking at the reasons people move to Australia.

We have also been researching information about Afghanistan and are in the process of writing an information report about the country.

Digital Technologies - Scratch Coding

We have been exploring creating games and animations using block based coding in Scratch. We first designed a times tables game using Google Slides - incorporating interactive links and user interface. Then we used the Scratch application to create a ghost catching game. Students had to choose a background and code their sprite (the ghost character) to appear and disappear when the ghost was clicked on. They added a timer and score to the game. Some students added additional sprites (characters) and coded them to score different points if they were clicked. Students have also explored creating animations and coding other games such as a boat race game.
