What's Happening in Prep?

Our grade preps have been very busy this term, being productive learners and taking part in lots of fun activities!
Mathematics
The students have been learning to manipulate and sequence numbers from 1-20, practicing skills such as counting backwards and forwards and identifying the numbers before and after. They’ve begun solving addition and subtraction problems, learning different strategies to solve problems with numbers up to 10. Students have been using a range of concrete materials such as playdough, unifix blocks, counters, and tens frames to assist their learning. The students have been introduced to 3D objects such as spheres, cubes, cylinders and cones and learning how to identify them in their environment.
English
The students have been writing recount texts, using time connectives such as first, next, later and finally to correctly sequence the text. They have also been exploring the orientation for a recount, which identifies the who, what, when and where in the text. Students are completing daily phonics lessons in which they’re learning to blend and segment the sounds to form various VC (Vowel-Consonant), CVC and CCVC words. They do this through a range of activities like spelling quizzes, dictation, and sound swaps.
Inquiry
Students have been learning about families and their community and how things change or stay the same over time. They shared family photos to help them describe and discuss their families, their personal life, and how things have changed since they were born. They identified how changing technology has influenced the daily life of families and the wider community. In preparation for the art show the students have been creating a variety of art pieces to show their learning about important people, places and events.
100 Days of School
This term the prep students celebrated their 100 days of school. This was their first milestone and there are many more to come! It was a fun time at school with students dressing up in all things 100 and completing activities that incorporated the number 100.
Book Week & Father’s Day Celebrations
The students took part in their first ever ‘Book Week Parade’. They dressed up as characters from their favourite books and paraded around the gym with their Dads or special people. They celebrated this year’s shortlisted children’s books with an incursion in which actors performed sections of each book that the children could interact with and enjoy. They also enjoyed buying fabulous gifts for their dads and loved ones and making them a special gift too.
