As a school, we started our Little Learners Love Literacy journey at the beginning of 2026. Little Learners Love Literacy is an explicit and sequential literacy approach for teaching children to read, write and spell with confidence.

The Warburton East Prep students are working within the Foundation Building Blocks of Stages 1–4, focussing on single letter–sound correspondences and reading and spelling CVC words. We have recently introduced decodable readers in the classroom for our Prep students, which have been a great success.

Learning to read, write and spell is complex, and our Grade 1 and 2 students are thriving in each stage that is targeted to their individual learning needs. Our Grade 1 and 2 students also have access to decodable texts, using their knowledge of letters and sounds to decode. This helps eliminate the habit of guessing and highlights the Little Learners Love Literacy catchphrase: books that children LOVE to read, with words they CAN read.
