What's On In Foundation

TERM 3 OVERVIEW

It has been wonderful to welcome the students back after the holidays. They have returned happy, settled, and ready to learn. It’s lovely to see how confident they are with our classroom routines as they continue to grow and build their knowledge. This term is extra special as we celebrate an exciting milestone—100 Days of School! Be sure to save Friday, 7 August in your diary. More information will be shared soon.

MATHS

In Maths, Foundation students will continue to build their number skills through fun, hands-on learning. They will explore numbers to 20, practise addition and subtraction using concrete materials, and strengthen their counting and subitising skills. Students will also investigate repeating and counting patterns, learn more about length, weight, and time, and make connections between 2D shapes, 3D objects, and the world around them. They will also practise giving and following simple directions and collect and organise information through simple surveys.

ENGLISH

This term in English, Foundation students will continue to build their reading, writing, and speaking skills. They will strengthen their knowledge of letters and sounds through phonics and spelling, practise correct letter formation, and build confidence as they read a range of decodable texts. Students will learn simple reading strategies to help them understand what they read. They will explore fairy tales to learn about story structure, retell familiar stories, and begin creating their own. As we prepare for our excursion to SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, students will explore information texts and write an information report about a sea creature. Throughout the term, they will also continue to grow in confidence when speaking, listening, and sharing their ideas.

INTEGRATED STUDIES

This term, our Geography unit is called My Places. Students will explore places that are familiar and special to them, learn why places are important, and discover the different ways people use places. We will also talk about simple ways to care for both natural and built environments. To finish the unit, we will enjoy our first excursion to SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium later this term. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks.

WELLBEING

This term students will learn about their strengths, feelings, and friendships. They will practise working together, showing kindness and respect, managing their emotions, and making safe, respectful choices. Students will also celebrate what makes each person unique and explore their hopes and dreams for the future.

During our Cyber Safety sessions, students will learn how to recognise when something online feels unsafe, understand how their feelings can help them make safe choices, and explore ways to build healthy digital habits. They will also be introduced to strategies and simple ways they can practice managing their emotions and use technology in a balanced way.
