Symbols of God:  Light

Psalm 119: 105 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 

When we feel real darkness that comes with a sense of not knowing which way to step. Many of us have felt it, particularly if we are standing at a crossroads in our lives, and unsure which direction leads forward and which leads to regret. In those moments, we crave not a floodlight that reveals the whole journey at once, but simply enough light to see the next step.

That's exactly the image the psalmist gives us. Not a spotlight illuminating the distant horizon, but a lamp, which is small, close and personal, and which shows us just enough ground to walk safely. In the ancient world, this would have meant a small clay lamp carried low, its flame casting a modest circle of light around the traveler's sandals on a dark road. It wasn't meant to show the whole journey. It was meant to keep the traveller from stumbling in the moment.

Throughout the Bible, light carries the weight of God's presence, truth, and guidance. Light exposes what darkness hides. Light warms. Light gives us direction when we are lost. Unlike so many other things we might trust for direction such as our feelings, other people's opinions, or the shifting values of culture, light from God's Word doesn't flicker with circumstances. It doesn't change today and contradict itself tomorrow.

Yes the symbol of light is also deeply humble. God doesn't promise to show us five years down the road. He promises light for the next step. That requires something of us: trust for the steps we can't yet see, and obedience for the ground right in front of us.

Consider where you are right now. Maybe you're facing a decision and praying for certainty about the outcome. This verse offers something a relationship with the God who walks the road with you, giving exactly enough light for right now, and promising more light will come as you need it.

Faithfulness often involves taking today's step in the light you've already been given, trusting that tomorrow's light will come when tomorrow arrives.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being a lamp when the road ahead feels dark. Help me trust You for the steps I cannot yet see, and give me the courage to walk faithfully in the light You've already given. Amen.
