DISTRICT ATHLETICS
A wonderful day was had by all at Casey Fields on Tuesday 11th August. All students demonstrated terrific effort, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day!
We are incredibly proud of the many Grade 5 students who progressed to the District competition, where they were part of the team that took out the overall win—what a tremendous achievement!
We wish all students progressing to the upcoming Division competition the very best of luck. We know they will represent our school with great pride, determination and terrific sportsmanship. Well done to everyone involved!
GRADE 5 & PREP BUDDIES:
Our Grade 5 and Prep Buddy program continues to be a favourite highlight for our Grade 5 students! It has been wonderful to see the special relationships between our Grade 5s and their Prep buddies continue to grow and flourish throughout the year.
Our Grade 5 students have embraced their role as older buddies, showing kindness, patience and enthusiasm while being wonderful role models for our youngest students. We are so proud of the way they have taken on this responsibility and look forward to seeing these friendships continue to develop throughout the remainder of the year!
BOOK WEEK:
What a wonderful Book Week we have had in Grade 5! This year’s Book, Book Jungle Drums by Greame Base, has provided students with many opportunities to celebrate the joy of reading while exploring important themes of self-acceptance, celebrating differences and embracing individuality.
Our Book Week performance was a fantastic way for students to showcase their learning. Students worked collaboratively to explore these themes and brought their ideas to life through a mini skit, which they proudly performed for the school. It was wonderful to see their creativity, confidence and enthusiasm shine on stage!
The Battle of the Books has also been a huge hit! Students have loved reading a selection of wonderful stories each week, sharing their thoughts and opinions, and voting for their favourites. There has been plenty of discussion and some very passionate votes! We can’t wait to see which book takes out the title of Grade 5’s favourite book!
To finish off our Book Week celebrations, students enjoyed a Buddies Booknic, sharing some of their much-loved storybooks with their buddies over lunch. It was a lovely opportunity to combine two of our favourite things—reading and spending time with our buddies!
It has been a fantastic celebration of books, imagination, individuality and the joy that comes from getting lost in a great story.
MATHS, ENGLISH & INTEGRATED STUDIES
Mathematics:
Our Grade 5 mathematicians have been busy exploring a range of engaging and practical mathematical concepts. Through our Commonwealth Games unit, students have investigated different forms of measurement, data, decimals and symmetry, applying their mathematical skills to real-world sporting contexts.
Our upcoming Playground Design unit will provide students with the exciting opportunity to redesign a playground while exploring angles, area and perimeter, 3D shapes, data, mapping and scaled maps, as well as financial mathematics. Students will be challenged to use their mathematical knowledge creatively and practically as they bring their playground designs to life.
English:
In English, students have been immersed in our text study of Bindi, exploring the novel’s characters, themes and messages, as well as learning more about the author and different writing genres. A particular focus has been on poetry, including free verse, while continuing to develop students’ reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary skills.
Students have thoroughly enjoyed working through Bindi, and it has been wonderful to see the rich and meaningful discussions taking place both as a whole class and in small groups.
Students have been encouraged to share their ideas, make connections with the text and consider different perspectives.
Integrated Studies:
Our Integrated Studies unit, Connections, has been exploring the important concepts of needs and wants and how these influence the choices we make in everyday life. Students have been developing their understanding of budgeting and financial decision-making through a range of real-life scenarios. They have enjoyed applying their knowledge to practical situations and considering how their choices can impact themselves and others.
