Grade 2

Literacy
This term in literacy, students have been developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a range of engaging activities. We have been focusing on building reading fluency, comprehension strategies and confidence when sharing ideas. Students are practising sounding out and spelling unfamiliar words, discussing texts, and making connections to their own experiences to deepen understanding.
You can support literacy at home by reading regularly with your child, discussing stories together, and encouraging them to complete their take home readers. Thank you for your continued support in helping our young learners develop a love of literacy!
Writing
In the past fortnight, students have been introduced to the hybrid story book ‘Under the Southern Cross’ which contains both narrative and informative features. Utilising this book throughout each writing lesson, the Grade 2’s have engaged in Think, Pair, Share questions before, during and after reading. Recalling events from the book whilst building their knowledge of text-to-self connections and noun groups, students have been refining their writing skills, expanding them with greater detail.
Numeracy
In Maths, our Grade 2 students have been busy building their number knowledge and confidence with three-digit numbers! They have been learning how to place three-digit numbers accurately on a number line, using whole numbers to help them see where each number belongs. This has helped students understand how numbers grow and relate to one another.
Students have also practised ordering three-digit numbers from smallest to largest by carefully using their place value knowledge. They explored the value of the hundreds, tens and ones to decide which numbers come first, middle or last.
We have been working on standard partitioning, where students break numbers into hundreds, tens and ones to show their value clearly.
It has been wonderful to see students explaining their thinking, using maths language, and showing growing confidence with place value concepts. Well done, Grade 2 mathematicians!
