Information and Reminders

2027 Prep Transition #2 – This Wednesday

Our 2027 Preps will be joining us for their second transition session this Wednesday. Like last time, the session will run for the first two hours of the school day, before our current Preps return to their usual classrooms after recess.

During this time, our current Preps will head to the BER and spend the morning with their Grade 6 buddies, participating in learning activities connected to our CBL and mentor text learning.

Important arrival information: On Wednesday morning, students will need to take their school bag straight to the BER and line up there. They will be met by their Grade 6 buddies and the Grade 6 teachers. We will talk to students about this at school, but we ask that parents please remind their child about the different morning routine before they arrive on Wednesday.

After recess, students will return to their usual classrooms and continue their normal school day.

*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.

Phonics and reading

We are continuing our learning about long vowels and the role of final E. This week, we will explore the u_e pattern, as in cube, before completing a review of all the long vowel patterns we have learnt. Students will practise reading and spelling words containing these patterns and use their new knowledge to write simple sentences.

What can you do at home?

• Support your child to read the decodable book and/or UFLI text in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.

• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.

•Review the letter names and sounds for all letters of the alphabet. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.

•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet).

• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing

Following on from our learning about clouds, students will explore the water cycle and learn how rain, hail and snow occurs. They will develop their understanding of the key vocabulary associated with these concepts and create a water cycle craft to show the different stages of the cycle.

Students will continue to write their own simple narratives. They will create a text with a clear beginning, middle and end, using our mentor text as inspiration and support. Students will also continue to develop their handwriting skills using their Sky, Grass, Ground books, with a focus on correct letter formation, size and placement.

What can you do at home?

•Encourage your child to write about things they are interested in - a picture, a favourite animal, something they did that day or a story they have imagined. Encourage them to sound out words using the sounds they know and have a go at spelling independently.

Maths

We are beginning a new concept of place value, working towards understanding numbers up to 120. We will start by exploring ordinal numbers, such as 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and learning how to describe the position of objects in a sequence. Students will then review counting, making and representing teen numbers using ten-frames, reinforcing their understanding that teen numbers are made up of one group of ten and some extra ones.

What can you do at home?

•Practise ordinal numbers by using everyday opportunities to talk about positions in a sequence, such as who is 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a line, or the order of toys in a row.

•Make teen numbers: Use Lego, blocks or other small objects to make numbers from 11–19. Encourage your child to make a group of 10 and then count the extra ones to find the total.

CBL

Last week, students enjoyed using their Cloud Spotters to look for different types of clouds. We hope you enjoyed having a go at home, too! This week, students will become Weather Watchers as they begin tracking the weather in their own weather journals. They will use weather-specific vocabulary to observe and describe what the day looks and feels like, helping them record their observations and notice how the weather changes over time.

Wellbeing

SWPBS

Our SWPBS focus is Be Safe – Being Safe in All Settings and Stopping When Asked To. Students will practise following safety instructions and stopping their actions when asked by an adult or another student. This is important because it helps keep everyone safe, prevents accidents and ensures that everyone can learn and play in a safe and respectful environment.

Respectful Relationships

Students will explore positive relationships through the topic of Fair and Friendly Play. They will learn what it means to play fairly, treat others with respect and make sure everyone feels included and has the opportunity to join in.

Cyber Safety

Students will explore how to recognise emotions in others, both online and offline. They will learn about empathy and consider ways to support others when they are experiencing big or difficult feelings, helping them build positive relationships and better understand how others may be feeling.
