Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 3!
Welcome to Week 3! Our Grade 5 and 6 students have made a wonderful start to Term 4, and we look forward to another busy week of learning, collaboration and exciting opportunities. With plenty of important events approaching, we encourage students to continue demonstrating enthusiasm, responsibility and a positive attitude towards their learning.
Reminders:
Hats
With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 5 and 6 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already, and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
Literacy
Reading
This week in Reading, students will begin exploring news articles, investigating how information is presented and communicated to an audience. Students will examine the structure and key features of news reports, considering how headlines, factual information and language choices are used to inform and engage readers.
Students will also develop their ability to identify important information, distinguish between facts and opinions, and consider how news stories can be presented from different perspectives.
Writing
In Writing, students will begin developing their understanding of news report writing. Students will explore the structure of a news article, including headlines, introductions and supporting details, while learning how to communicate information clearly and accurately.
Students will have opportunities to apply these skills by planning and composing their own news reports, focusing on presenting factual information in an engaging and organised way.
Phormes
This week in Phormes, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will explore the Latin word elements pel/pulse, meaning to push or drive. Students will investigate how these elements appear in familiar and unfamiliar words, such as repel, propel, impulse and expel.
Through exploring word meanings and connections, students will continue strengthening their vocabulary, spelling knowledge and understanding of how words are formed.
Speaking and Listening
This week in Speaking and Listening, students will continue exploring news and how information is communicated to an audience. Students will develop their confidence in sharing information clearly, listening actively and discussing current events or news stories in a respectful and thoughtful manner.
Language Conventions
This week in Language Conventions, students will explore the use of “really, really” in writing, considering how repeated or overused words can affect the quality of a sentence. Students will investigate how selecting more precise and descriptive vocabulary can strengthen their writing, helping them communicate ideas more effectively and engage their readers.
What you can do at home:
- Read or watch an age-appropriate news story together and discuss the main information, including who, what, when, where and why.
- Encourage your child to identify the difference between facts and opinions within a news report.
- Challenge your child to replace commonly used words such as really or very with more interesting and descriptive vocabulary.
Maths
This week in Maths, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will begin exploring Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Students will develop their understanding of the relationships between these three representations of numbers and investigate how they can be used interchangeably to represent parts of a whole.
Through a range of practical activities and problem-solving tasks, students will practise recognising, comparing and converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, while making connections to real-life situations.
What you can do at home:
- Look for examples of fractions, decimals and percentages in everyday life, such as shopping discounts, recipes or sporting statistics.
- Encourage your child to identify common equivalents, such as ½ = 0.5 = 50% and ¼ = 0.25 = 25%.
- Discuss how percentages are used when shopping, particularly when calculating discounts or comparing prices.
CBL
Big Idea: Survival and Service
Challenge: Strengthen our community by giving back and inspiring others to pay it forward.
Essential Question: How do acts of service help communities survive, connect and thrive?
Guiding Questions:
- What does it mean to serve others?
- How has our school and wider community invested in us?
- Our time, skills and effort can make a genuine difference. How?
This week in CBL, students will continue exploring our focus of Survival and Service, considering how their actions, skills and efforts can positively contribute to the school and wider community.
Students involved in the school production will continue working collaboratively towards their upcoming performances, developing their creativity, communication and teamwork skills. Meanwhile, students participating in our service-focused activities will continue exploring event planning, investigating how they can organise meaningful opportunities to give back and support others.
Through these experiences, students will strengthen their understanding of how cooperation, responsibility and acts of service can bring people together and create a positive impact.
Wellbeing
This week in Wellbeing, students will participate in the Courage to Care incursion, encouraging them to reflect on the importance of empathy, respect and standing up for others.
Through discussions and activities, students will explore how individual choices and actions can influence those around them and consider the importance of being an upstander rather than a bystander when witnessing unfair or unkind behaviour.
These experiences will support students in developing a greater understanding of how courage, kindness and respect can contribute to a safe and inclusive school community.
What you can do at home:
- Discuss what it means to show courage and stand up for others when something is unfair.
- Encourage your child to share what they learnt during the Courage to Care incursion.
- Talk about small acts of kindness and how these can make a meaningful difference to others.
