School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Be Kind: Outside, I Will Play Fairly
Our SWPBS focus is “Be Kind – Outside, I will play fairly.” This expectation encourages students to follow agreed rules, support and encourage others, and demonstrate kindness and respect, whether they win or lose. Seeking teacher support is also an important part of playing fairly. At times, a teacher’s guidance can help cut through competing voices, clarify expectations and ensure everyone understands and agrees on the rules, helping to create a positive and inclusive play environment for all.
Families can support this expectation by encouraging good sportsmanship at home and reinforcing the importance of enjoyment, teamwork and effort. Modelling respectful behaviour and recognising positive choices helps students develop kindness, fairness and respect for others, both on and off the playground.
Families can support this learning at home by:
- Looking beyond the score. Ask, “What did you enjoy?” or “How did you help your team?”
- Noticing fair play. Try, “You shared the ball so everyone could participate.”
- Modelling kindness. Congratulate others and speak respectfully about players and officials.
- Supporting big feelings. Acknowledge disappointment and practise calming strategies together.
- Solving problems when calm. Discuss what your child could do if a game feels unfair.
Feeling disappointed is understandable, especially when games don’t go as expected. Children need support to express these feelings safely while continuing to treat others with kindness and respect. At school, we reinforce these skills through our playground expectations: play fairly, encourage others and seek adult support when needed.
