Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week in Auslan, students will continue developing their fingerspelling skills and practising both verses of Advance Australia Fair. Students will also learn a range of new Auslan signs relating to familiar objects, animals and descriptive words, reinforcing their learning through a fun cut-and-paste activity. Next week, students will put this vocabulary into practice through a partner communication activity, using Auslan to describe objects and follow signed instructions.

Grade 3 and 4

This week, students will explore how signing space can be used like a map to show where people and objects are located in relation to one another. Students will practise placing people and objects in their signing space before creating a map of their own bedroom and using Auslan to describe its layout to a partner. They will also put their receptive skills to the test by watching a signed description and drawing what they understand.

Grade 5 and 6

This week, students will be introduced to depicting signs and explore how signers can use their hands, movement and space to visually represent actions, objects and ideas. Through an “Act It, Don’t Sign It” challenge, students will experiment with showing actions and scenarios rather than relying on familiar standard signs. Students will finish by considering how depicting signs add visual detail and meaning to communication in Auslan.

STEM

Grade 1 and 2

Students will continue to explore mixtures and how different proportions and combinations of materials affect stability and structure. They will experiment with different sand and water mixtures to build and test sand castles.

Grade 3 and 4

This week students will apply their knowledge of natural and made materials to plan and design a purposeful object or structure. Students will select their materials by carefully considering their beneficial properties and their environmental impact.

Grade 5 and 6

Students will continue to explore the irreversible changes of metal corrosion, learning about the difference between rusting iron and the corrosion of other metals. They will complete observations on last week's nail rusting experiment in a spreadsheet, and investigate strategies to avoid corrosion. We will also continue to work on coding a game in Scratch.

Christmas Card Fundraiser

During Term 3, students across the school created a Christmas artwork to feature on their very own set of Christmas cards!

Through Crazy Camel Fundraisers, families can purchase cards featuring their child’s artwork to share with friends and family. All funds raised will support the Art program at Wonga Park Primary School.

Orders are now open and will close on Friday October 30th. They will be delivered to the school in the following weeks ready for collection. If you have any problems with viewing or ordering your child's cards, please contact the office.

Community Caterpillar

Some of your may have already met this very friendly caterpillar up at the Wonga Park Shops. A local family who's daughters used to attend our school have set it up and would love for him to be 'fed' with more gorgeous rock creations! Check it out and be inspired to make your own at home to add to his body!

In the classroom this week

Prep students will be exploring symmetry and experimenting with paint colours to create butterfly wings to attach to their caterpillar.

Grade 1/2 students will be creating a ‘Cogsworth’ face connecting their learning to their upcoming performance in Beauty and the Beast Jr.

Grade 3/4 students will be plastering their ice-creams from last week, creating a solid structure to paint on next week.

Grade 5 students are continuing to sew and decorate their puppet for their prep buddy. They are learning to use a sewing machine safely and create a realistic animal toy for them to enjoy.

Grade 6 students will begin the Graduation Portrait, taking a photo of themselves before tracing it onto acetate paper with sharpie and painting the reverse side in colours of their choice. This will be displayed at their graduation later in December.
