Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

We have had another wonderful and busy week of learning in our classroom. It is hard to believe that we are already moving through Week 7 of the term! The students continue to show great enthusiasm for their learning and are doing a fantastic job demonstrating our school expectations of Safety, Respect and Learning each day.

Friendly Reminder:  Please ensure your child is in the correct school uniform and has their name on items that come off and on during the day. This includes jumpers and jackets. We have a lot of lost property at school to check if needed.

Health Reminder: To help keep all of our students and staff healthy, we kindly ask that children who are unwell remain at home to rest and recover. If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, please ensure they stay home for at least 24 hours after the last episode before returning to school. This helps prevent the spread of illness within our community. Thank you for your support in keeping everyone safe and well.

If your child has any sort of medical condition please ensure that you have updated the school and the class teacher.

This week we learnt about:

Religious Education: In Religion, we are learning about how welcoming others with love and kindness can positively change a community. Students are exploring ways they can show acceptance, compassion and inclusion in their everyday actions.

Mathematics: In Maths, we are learning to add and subtract numbers using a range of strategies. Students are practising different ways to solve problems and explain their thinking. We are encouraging students to choose strategies that work best for them, such as partitioning numbers, counting on and back, and using number lines. Developing these strategies helps students build confidence and flexibility when solving mathematical problems.

Structured Literacy:  In Literacy, we have been reading Wilam: A Birrarung Story and exploring the rich Aboriginal language and important themes within the text. Students have been making connections to the story and discussing the message it shares about caring for the land and community. We are using the book as inspiration for our writing, where students are building their vocabulary, describing settings in detail, and expressing their understanding of the story through their own creative ideas.

Auslan: In Auslan we are looking at the following signs for the week:

Social & Emotional Learning: In Social and Emotional Learning, students are exploring their personal and cultural strengths. They are reflecting on the things that make them unique and identifying qualities they feel proud of. Through discussions and activities, students are learning to recognise their strengths and celebrate what makes them who they are.

Integrated Studies:

In Integrated Studies, we are learning about the different states and territories of Australia. Students are beginning to explore where each state is located and some of their key features. We are also taking a closer look at our own state, Victoria, and learning more about its landmarks, communities and what makes it unique.

How you can support at home:

Families play an important role in supporting learning at school, and there are many simple ways you can help at home.

  • Ask your child to tell you about the book we read this week. You can read the book together
  • Ask your child to tell you what they learnt about adding and subtracting.
  • Read with your child and ask them questions about the book
  • Practise handwriting, using upper case and lower case correctly

These small, regular conversations help build confidence and reinforce learning in a meaningful way.
