Year 5
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Families,
This week, students completed NAPLAN and showed wonderful adaptability and resilience throughout the assessments. They are also engaging with stories written by Aboriginal authors and exploring human rights through the United Nations Declarations. Looking ahead, we are excited for Athletics Day, where students will enjoy a range of sporting activities and celebrate participation, effort, and teamwork.
Our learning this week:
Religious Education:
In Religious Education, students have been learning about the season of Lent and how it invites us to follow the mission of Jesus. They explored how Lent is a time to grow closer to God through prayer, reflection and helping others. Students also discussed how the mission of Jesus connects to social justice, including respecting human rights, sharing resources and challenging inequality, and considered ways they can live out these values in their own lives during Lent.
English
In English, students have been strengthening their reading and writing skills. They have been practising handwriting joins and improving their typing accuracy, while identifying subjects and verbs in sentences. Using our class novel War Horse, students have been developing reading fluency and vocabulary. They have also been planning and writing persuasive texts and editing their work to improve clarity and vocabulary.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning to solve problems involving area. They have been using grids to help calculate the area of different shapes and applying this understanding to solve worded problems. This has helped students develop their problem-solving skills and deepen their understanding of how area is measured.
Integrated Studies
Students are learning about sustainability and how they can take action to care for the environment. They are exploring what sustainability means, identifying real environmental issues, and proposing practical actions that could help. Students are also explaining how their ideas could benefit people and the environment, and giving reasons why these actions could make a positive difference.
Social Emotional Learning:
In Social Emotional Learning, students have been learning about respect, human rights and Aboriginal culture. Through stories written by Aboriginal authors, students explored different perspectives and reflected on the importance of listening to and valuing Aboriginal voices. They also learned about the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, discussing why human rights are important for ensuring people are treated with dignity and respect.
AusIan
In Auslan, Year 4 students are learning to communicate using basic signs and simple sentences. They are practising greetings, questions, and classroom instructions, as well as exploring how facial expressions and body language help convey meaning.
