Sun Project CBCA Shadow Judging
Launching Tuesday 12 May, Lunchtime
The Children's Book Council of Australia is inviting young voices from across Australia to join the conversation about the books on their ‘Book of the Year Shortlist’.
Shadow Judging at MGSC will begin this week with the first book on the list of six shortlisted books to be reviewed by the student judges - Darkest Night Brightest Star by author Barry Jonsberg. This is summarized by the publisher, Allen & Unwin as a life-affirming YA novel about fractured families, tough talk, masculinity, finding friendship and overturning expectations.
Students will work with a judging criterion and use a rating scale to form a consensus about the merits of each book. To conclude the program, one CBCA Older Reader book of the year will be voted for by the Shadow Judges across Australia, and the winner announced on 21 August, during Book Week.
Library Bookmark Competition 2026
There were 115 entries submitted this year, and I would like to thank every student who submitted a bookmark - they are all on display in the library entrance.
I am delighted to announce the two winners of this year’s library bookmark competition are:
- Hand drawn – Coco Z for Ducks in a Bath
- Digital entry - Faith B for Meadow Reading.
Special mention goes out to the following students for their superb designs: Amelia S, Charlotte K, Lori S, Lyla K, Sophia E and Zoe H. All of these students will have their bookmark designs printed and the new bookmarks will be available early term two.
I would like to thank Ms. Brown and Ms. Duggan for judging the 2026 library bookmark competition as they thoughtfully examined every single bookmark before selecting the winning entries.
Book Club
The MGSC Book Club met last week and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir was suggested. The movie, which is now showing in cinemas is fabulous, but (you guessed it) the book is better! We will meet during the final week of term two on Wednesday 24 June.
Access The Age
Did you know that MGSC subscribes to The Digital Age Newspaper? Students are able to access current editions and archived newspapers by signing in with their Compass login via The Age tile on the school intranet.
