All Rights at Trades Hall

On 30 April Year 11 and 12 VM students visited the Trades Hall in the city. Throughout the excursion, students learnt valuable information about bullying, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace, as well as where to seek support if needed. We also learned about the important role unions play in protecting workers’ rights.

Students were also given a fascinating tour of the Trades Hall and explored its rich history, learning about significant events and people from the 1900s fighting for the initial Eight Hour Work day. One inspiring story was that of Zelda D'Aprano, who chained herself to the Commonwealth building in Melbourne in 1969 in protest for equal pay for women.

The experience provided students with important knowledge for their future workplaces, helping them better understand fair work rights, workplace support systems, and the importance of receiving correct wages and fair treatment at work.

There are also many exciting opportunities coming up for our VM students. The Year 11 students are preparing to embark on their first block of Structured Workplace Learning (June 1 - June 12), where they will gain valuable hands-on industry experience. Students will also attend the Trades & Tech Fit Careers Expo on 3 June, exploring pathways in trades and technology industries. Looking ahead, the VM Market Day will take place on September 10, showcasing students’ creativity, teamwork, and enterprise skills alongside fellow VM students within the wider Bayside community.

Over the recent holidays one of our Year 12 students attended the ‘Loreal Future You Program’. A free program provided for secondary students who want to get a taste of the hairdressing industry with hands-on training, expert insights and more. The program was run over three days.

Here’s some insight from the student’s perspective about the experience:

The program was amazing. The first day we learnt a lot about the base of the hair and different types of root textures. Fun fact: Oily hair develops from sweat and natural hair oil and dry hair forms from stress, ruff shampoo and scratching.

The second day learnt about the colour wheel and how dark hair has more blue tones and lighter hair has more yellow tones and how in the middle has red tones. Then we got to practical activities. Like how to curl hair and blow dry, we coloured different strands of hair and had a go at a new machine which allows you to see in the base of the hair which is called the surface. L’Oréal also has an app where you can try on different hair colours and textures as filters.

The last day, we had our parents join us to talk to amazing stylists from different companies who talked to us about hair and their company. They were also speaking with us to decide if they wanted to provide apprenticeships or just simple advice.

The program was an amazing chance to put work experience on a resume and figure out if you really are passionate for a career in hairdressing.

L’Oréal have advised there will be another 3-day experience in the July school holidays, so if you missed this opportunity, keep your eye on the careers newsletter for details when they become available.
