Grade 2 Sleepover

Friday, August 28th
After tucking into a quick meal and grabbing our things, teachers headed to Urban Camp in Royal Park, Parkville. After a quick check of the property, teachers set up rooms and then got ready for check in.
At six o’clock students began to arrive, excited and ready for a great night together. After being checked in, students met together in the dining room in order to find out who they were sharing their rooms with. No tears at the time as most were satisfied with their rooms and groups… I can’t say that this was the case in the morning though depending on how much sleep people got.
After students took their gear to their rooms and sorted out their bunks we grabbed our torches and headed out to the park for our night walk. Led by our expert Jo, we took a walk around the section of parkland surrounding the camp. At one stage we saw the silhouette of a flying fox in the parklights floating by, which was quite exciting.
When we got back from our walk, students were put into two groups for our quiz and disco sessions. From all reports the quiz was enjoyable and as I was in the disco group it was quite entertaining to see the students that were enjoying their dancing and the ‘cool’ kids at the back of the room pretending not to be interested. All in all though it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and each other's company.
After all the excitement of quizzing and dancing it was time to calm down with a little supper before bed. A cup of Milo and a cookie in the dining room was a good way for everyone to share their quiz and dance experiences with each other. Then it was a quick set up of bunks, a change into PJ’s, tooth brushing and then a little chill time in the movie room before lights out.
Teachers discussed bedtime and sleeping expectations with students before taking them to their rooms and making sure they were all comfortable, allowing them to read for fifteen minutes before lights out. This went quite smoothly and most rooms went to sleep relatively quickly with only a few excited or nervous students taking a bit longer to fall asleep.
In the morning everyone woke up early, bouncing out of their rooms and ready for breakfast. After a quick clean up of the rooms and pack up of bags, everyone headed to the dining room for a catch up and chat about who kept who awake. Breakfast went quickly and before we knew it parents had arrived for pickup and another year two sleepover had come to an end.
We’d like to thank all of the support we received from the parent community and also a big thank you to Poppy and all the teachers who gave their time to make the overnight stay a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. A special mention goes to Ben Wilkie for the initial setup and Bridget Jacobs for taking on the task of organising things leading up to and over the duration of the event.
