Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,
We are now well into Term 3, and the students are making fantastic progress across all areas of their learning. Here is a snapshot of what we’ve been working on and some important reminders for the weeks ahead.
Literacy
In literacy, students are busy constructing their information reports on the Gold Rush and Eureka Stockade. We are reading The Night We Stormed Eureka and the teachers are reporting some fantastic discussions around the classes.
Mathematics
This week in maths, we have been exploring the connections between multiplication and division. Students have been working on both the traditional algorithms and a range of alternative strategies for solving problems. We encourage students to continue practicing their multiplication facts at home to develop automatic recall and fluency.
Inquiry
Students have engaged in some great learning around the Gold Rush and are enjoying choosing response tasks from the grid to complete and share each week. Task examples from this week include:
- Illustrate and describe the different tools that miners would need on the Gold Fields
- Make a flow chart illustrating the finding of gold in Australia - outlining key dates and locations
- Choose 1 particular mining technique and write a procedure to help someone use it.
- (at least 8 steps) Include images and diagrams
- Create a map to show a goldfield. Include the township, housing, mining areas, etc.
