Dear Parents & Carers,
Student Recognition Award
Thank you to all the students who created entries for our Digital Certificate Competition. We were amazed by the creative and colourful designs. The winning design for our Semester 2 award was created by Cormac, Kit and Oscar from 3/4C!
What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?
English
During our Structured Literacy sessions, we have been learning about the Greek root word ‘phon’ and Latin root word ‘aud’. You might like to quiz your child about its meaning!
Our grammar focus has continued with revision of common and proper nouns, including the correct capitalisation of proper nouns. We have also explored the difference between concrete and abstract nouns.
In reading and writing, we read an information text about Arctic foxes and created our own notes on this topic. We then expanded these notes into sentences and organised them into paragraphs under topic-specific headings related to the Arctic fox.
Maths
This fortnight in Maths, we have explored the Area Model and Bar Model for multiplication while solving a range of worded problems. Students have also been introduced to Facts & Fire, where they practise and record their recall of multiplication facts. Regular practice of times tables at home will help students develop automatic recall and confidence with multiplication.
Inquiry
As we continue our Explorers unit, students have investigated significant early world explorers and their contributions to exploration, including Marco Polo, Zheng He, Ibn Battuta, Dirk Hartog, Willem Janszoon and William Dampier.
Stop Motion Project
During Weeks 8 and 9, students will work in small groups to create a 1–3 minute stop-motion animation that tells the story of an early European explorer or demonstrates what life was like aboard an explorer's ship.
Throughout the term, students will research, plan, write scripts, design sets and characters, and learn the skills needed to produce their animation. As this is a substantial project, there will be an expectation that some planning and preparation tasks are completed at home in the lead-up to filming, as well as during class time. More information and key dates will be shared as the project progresses.
Stop Motion Animation Incursion (More information on Compass).
On Monday 24th or Tuesday 25th of August all Year 3 and 4 students will participate in an Digi Ed Claymation Incursion. Please check COMPASS for all the event details, and to consent / pay for your child’s attendance. Please contact the office if you need any assistance with this.
Year 3/4D & 3/4E will participate on Monday 24th August
Year 3/4A & Year 3/4B will participate on Tuesday 25th August.
3/4C will be split across the two days, joining each of the other four grades.
Friendology/Wellbeing
Last week, students reviewed BRAVING, Friendship Facts, trust and respect in friendships as part of our Friendology program. During our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons, we also explored strategies that can help children when they are experiencing challenges or situations that may make them feel worried or unsafe.
Reminders
Cold & Flu Season
With the cold and flu season upon us, please be mindful of other children and if your child is unwell please provide them with a rest period at home.
Homework - weekly homework continues to consist of:
- Minimum 4 nights reading with at least 80 minutes per week recorded in school diary (Book title, pages read, minutes read).
- Diary is to be brought to school each Friday signed by parents.
- Although not compulsory, we encourage your child to complete assigned Mathletics tasks.
