Year 1/2

Literacy:

In Literacy, the Grade 1/2 students recently finished their persuasive writing pieces, where they worked hard to persuade their audience that Moriac Primary School should invest in some chickens! Students explored persuasive techniques such as repetition, facts, and strong arguments to support their opinions.

We are now moving into Procedure Writing, beginning with the procedure “How to Make a Jam Sandwich.” Students are learning about the structure and features of procedures, including ingredients, equipment, steps, verbs, and adverbs.

This is a wonderful opportunity to involve your child in everyday procedures at home. You might like to:

  • cook together using a favourite recipe,
  • build Lego by following instructions,
  • play a new game and learn the rules,
  • or follow directions to complete a task.

Maths:

In Maths, students have been working hard on building their number skills in addition and subtraction. Students have been challenged with learning how to add 2 digit numbers. They learnt the jump strategy, the split strategy and how to use MAB to help them solve. They even practiced how to add money. In subtraction, students are using number lines and the the counting back strategy to help them understand subtraction.

Students have began a location and direction unit. Students have been learning about directional language, such as forward, back, left and write. Students played some fun games to practice these skills.

Humanities

In Humanities, students have explored how to respond in emergency situations and learnt about the important roles of emergency service providers. Students learnt what to say when calling 000, including how to clearly provide details about their location in an emergency. They also investigated a range of emergency services and created concept maps to record what they had learnt about police, firefighters, paramedics, and SES workers. Students enjoyed sharing their thinking and discussing questions about how emergency service providers help keep our community safe.

STEM session:

The grade 1/2's were lucky to have a visit from a whole class of pre-service teachers from Deakin. These teachers taught students about STEM, and completed a number of fun experiments:
