Year 3/4

Literacy

This week concluded our novel study of Brindabella. Over the past few weeks, students explored important themes and key messages within the text, including friendship, survival, belonging and courage. Students engaged with the novel in a variety of ways through teacher read-alouds, independent reading and shared reading with classmates. We focused on identifying how the author used descriptive language to create the mood and atmosphere of different settings, as well as recognising words, phrases and sentences that revealed characters’ feelings and actions. Students became deeply invested in the story and responded thoughtfully to the shock and sadness of the ending. During our literacy review sessions, students continued to practise parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, phonics, spelling and reading fluency skills.

Maths

During our Maths lessons, students explored a range of multiplication concepts and strategies. We focused on developing fluency and confidence with times table recall through games and hands-on activities. Students investigated arrays and even created their own “Array City” to demonstrate their understanding of rows and columns in multiplication. We also learnt about fact families and the connection between multiplication and division, helping students recognise the relationship between these operations. Students applied their learning to solve worded problems, using a variety of strategies to explain and justify their thinking.

Humanities

During Humanities lessons, students explored a variety of geographical concepts and developed their understanding of the world around them. We learnt about climate zones and biomes, investigated symbols of different countries and explored the food chain within the Daintree Rainforest ecosystem. Students also discussed the values and lifestyles of island nations and examined a range of natural features, including unique rock formations. Recently, students have begun planning their own island, which they will design and create over the coming weeks as part of an exciting inquiry project.

Wellbeing

During Wellbeing sessions, students continued participating in the Respectful Relationships program. We explored positive coping strategies, including ways to manage and tame angry feelings and to develop problem-solving skills for everyday situations. Students also learned about the importance of making meaningful apologies and reflecting on how their actions can impact others. Through discussions and activities, students were encouraged to build positive relationships, resilience and emotional awareness.

Reconciliation Week & National Sorry Day

As part of Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day, students engaged in meaningful discussions and learning experiences to deepen their understanding of the histories and cultures of First Nations Australians. We read a range of rich picture story books that encouraged thoughtful conversations about respect, connection, identity and reconciliation. Students also created artwork to recognise and reflect on these important occasions and the significance they hold for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Cyber Safety

On Thursday 28th, Senior Constable Cathryn Hastie visited our school to speak about Cyber Safety.  It was a informtion session where students were reminded how to be safe online including not giving out personal information and how to look for "red flags".  They were also reminded to block and report and tell a trusted adult if unsure.
