Airlie to Represent Australia
Airlie (Year 9) has been selected in the Australian team for basketball in the U15 FIBA Women's Oceania Cup Team to play in NZ later next month.
We wish Airlie all the best and congratulate her on this fantastic achievement!
Year 10 Go Girls Challenge
Thirty Year 10 students travelled to Melbourne's Lakeside Stadium on Tuesday 13 October to take part in the Go Girls Foundation 100km Challenge. After more than a term of planning and preparation, the big day had finally arrived and it was time to run, run, run!
In the lead-up to the event, our students set themselves an ambitious fundraising goal of $5,000 for the Go Girls Foundation, an organisation that supports women in local communities who are experiencing hardship. Students fundraised in a variety of ways and also organised a successful Go Girls fundraising day at school, which included baked goods sales, a BBQ and a casual clothes day. As of today, they have raised an impressive $5,200.
Following a two-and-a-half-hour bus trip to Melbourne on Tuesday morning, it was time to hit the track. We entered three teams, with the Pink and Orange teams aiming to collectively run 100kms, while the Purple team's goal was to run as far as possible.
The results were outstanding. Together, the Pink and Orange teams clocked up 111kms, while the Purple team completed 166 laps, covering an incredible 66kms between just 10 students.
It was a truly amazing day filled with energy, spirit and passion. The Go Girls Foundation 100km Challenge was a great success, and we are incredibly proud of our students' efforts, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the entire project.
Sports Science Athletics Carnival
On Friday 9 October, the Year 10 Sports Science class spent the day at Llanberris Athletics Track assisting with the Greater Western Region primary school track and field championships. Our students spent the day assisting School Sport Victoria officials with running all field events including triple jump, long jump, shot put, discus and high jump as well as additional roles such as marshalling and finish line judges. Our students received high praise from staff and officials who were in attendance on the day and they learned a lot about how a professional track and field meet is run.
All Schools Athletics
Over the last four days of the school holidays, 12 Loreto College students represented our College at the All Schools Athletics competition. This is one of the highest levels of track and field that a high school student can compete in and our students produced some outstanding results. Rebecca (Year 12) came in first place in the Senior hammer throw with a personal best throw of 35.06m whilst Eleanor (Year 10) also came first in the P17 1500m final running a 5:46 time. Well done to all of our other students who made the trip down to Melbourne to take part in this event during some trying weather conditions as well.
Sport and Rec Lifeguard Course
To conclude their Certificate II in Sport and Recreation, our Year 12 VCE-VM Sport students spent two days last week at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre completing their Lifeguard qualifications through Lifesaving Victoria. Through learning about non-contact tows, implementing practical knowledge and skills for completing spinal rescues, the students gained some valuable skills and experience to add to their professional portfolios by successfully completing this qualification.
