Literacy

Once

Once is a 2005 Best-Seller children's novel by Australian author Morris Gleitzman. It is about a Jewish boy named Felix who lived in Poland and is on a quest to find his book-keeper parents after he sees Nazis burning the books from a Catholic orphanage where he lived for over three years.

Students are exploring this well-known Morris Gleitzman novel. This book will feature a boy names Felix who is living in the middle of World War 2. Students will learn about the tough conditions of being a kid back in the war and the hardships people and children went through. They will construct an Information Report based on this topic. 

Morphology

struct = to build or pile up

Con+struct 

To construct something is to build or make it. 

Construct is of Latin origin, from the word constructus, meaning to put parts together in their proper place and order.

Construction and constructive come from the same Latin word, but have been used to in English for a couple of hundred years longer than construct.

In+struct

To instruct someone is to teach them something or tell them to do something. 

Instruct is of Latin origin, from the word instructus, meaning ‘to arrange, set in order, inform or teach’. 

Instruction comes from the same Latin word but has been used in English for about 100 years longer.

struct is our Latin Root word for this week. Struct means "to build or to pile up" and we explore many ways we can use struct as a morpheme. Finding and assessing new and old prefixes and suffixes to create these words.

Integrated Studies

This is me!

Throughout this unit, students will explore their identity and the characteristics that make them who they are. Students will consider the influence that the media, role models, and pressure from others has on their identity. 

Students will learn about the changes associated with puberty and investigate different ways to stay healthy in mind and body. They will create an identity self-portrait to celebrate who they are and share these with visitors at an Art Exhibition.

Over the last few weeks, students have been learning about influences in their life. They watched a short video about the incredible Australian boxer Harry Garside and heard about the reasons why many people admire him. Students have learnt about what role models do for us. A role-model is someone others look to as a good example. Role-models can inspire us to be more like them.  Role-models can be well-known people, but they might also be family members, friends, or trusted adults in your community.  Students have identified some key role models in their life’s.

Big Idea 8

BIG IDEA STATEMENT: 

ESTIMATION: Numerical calculations can be approximated by replacing numbers with other numbers that are close and easy to compute with mentally. Measurements can be approximated using known referents as the unit in the measurement process.

Big Idea 8 is one of our major ideas that mainly focuses on Number. Students are recapping long division and adding money or finances with rounded estimates. Students will explore LCM and HCF which will create factor trees until we hit our prime numbers. Lastly, parts of Algebra around fact families and measurement with estimations, measuring and for our extended students, ratios.
