Year 5/6 Team News

with Christina, Edan, Molly, Melati, Laura & Matt

Hello Year 5/6 families,

What's Coming up in the Classroom:

Reading: Students will be unpacking Reconciliation Week resources during reading and making connections to the class novel, 'Black Cockatoo'. This will involve viewing the documentary, 'The Final Quarter', that follows the story of former AFL player Adam Goodes and his experience with racism. Students will also work with their buddies on a Reconciliation Week activity.

Writing: In Weeks 7&8, students are finishing their persuasive leadership drafts and will publish these on Elastik. Further to this, they will review their work using a rubric and compare this to the AI generated feedback that uses the same rubric. To continue with the theme of leadership and politics, students will begin to look at the Parliament Prize and draft a Member's Statement that either looks to improve or celebrate community initiatives. Students will then have the opportunity to participate in the Parliament Prize by recording and submitting their entry. (See below for competition details).

Numeracy: In Weeks 7&8, students are finalising their Community Graden projects that focus on key skills in measurement, four operations and financial maths. At the completion of these projects, students will participate in revision sessions targeting areas of need highlighted in recent assessments.

Inquiry: In Weeks 7&8, Students will also look to prepare a ministerial profile for themselves that aligns with party policies. Students will experience a live ‘Q&A’ where they can critique party policies and plans. There will also be a guest speaker during this session with Mayoral experience, offering advice as we head closer to the WPS election.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Weeks 7&8, Willy Kids are considerate. Students will focus on what actions show consideration of others. They will reflect and set goals on being a considerate Willy Kid. In RR, students focus on using personal strengths in role play scenarios.

Although this in an OPTIONAL extra curricular event, in Week 7  all students in 5/6 will preparing a Member's Statement during Writing, and have the option of filming this for submission in the Parliament Prize. If you would like more information about this project, please view the details on https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/teach-and-learn/Resources/preparing-for-the-parliament-prize/
