Quatrain Poetry Writing
Learning Intention
To identify and use the structural features of a quatrain to write poetry.
Lesson Overview
Students have been learning about quatrain poems, which are poems or verses made up of four lines. They explored common rhyming patterns including AABB, ABAB and ABCB.
During the shared explicit teaching, students identified rhyming words, counted the lines in different poems and labelled the rhyming patterns. This helped students recognise how poets use rhyme and structure to create rhythm.
Students then brainstormed words and ideas connected to a topic or theme of their choice. Using their brainstorm, students planned and wrote their own quatrain, choosing a rhyming pattern to follow.
Students published their poems and created visuals to complement their writing. This allowed students to combine rhyme, creative language and visuals, rhyme to communicate their ideas.
What you can do at home
If you would like to continue the learning at home, parents can:
- Notice common rhyming patterns in popular songs and poems.
- Read poems together and identify the rhyming words and patterns.
- Encourage your child to write a short quatrain poem using an AABB, ABAB or ABCB pattern.
- Play with words by brainstorming rhyming words for different topics or themes.
