A Snapshot into Writing
Learning Experience Overview
To use speech marks and saying verbs to express how a character is speaking in our writing.
What students were asked to do
Using the same sentence, the teacher modelled how to use different expressions through talking verbs. This supported students to brainstorm synonyms for the word said.
Some examples of synonyms included:
- shouted (!)
- cried (!)
- exclaimed (!)
- stated (.)
- mumbled (.)
- queried (?)
The students then used these words to amplify their writing through their characters' expressive speech.
What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience
When reading, make an effort to notice the different ways characters' speech can be represented in texts, and test these out using your expression. Most importantly, have fun with language!
