Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention:

To use precise and interesting vocabulary to write clear instructions in the correct order.

Learning Experience Overview:

We worked together to sequence the images first, discussing what happens at each step of making hot chocolate. We then used the sequenced images to complete a shared writing activity, writing instructions using First, Then, Next, After that and Finally. We focused on identifying and using action words (bossy verbs) such as grab, put, pour, stir and enjoy, while matching each sentence to the correct picture.

What students were asked to do:

Students independently applied what we had practised during the shared writing lesson to create their own set of pancake instructions.

  • Cut out the pictures showing the different steps for making pancakes.
  • Look carefully at each picture and think about what is happening in each step.
  • Sequence the pictures in the correct order from beginning to end.
  • Glue each picture onto the template, placing one step in each section down the page.
  • Write a matching instruction next to each picture to explain what to do.
  • Use the sequencing words First, Then, Next, After that and Finally to organise the instructions.
  • Include action words (bossy verbs) such as get, pour, mix, stir, cook and flip.
  • Check that each written instruction matches the picture and that the steps are in the correct order.

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Encourage your child to help follow or explain simple recipes at home, such as making toast, sandwiches or pancakes.
  • Ask them to sequence the steps using First, Then, Next, After that and Finally.
  • Encourage them to use action words (bossy verbs) such as get, pour, mix, stir, cut and spread when explaining what to do.
  • Ask your child to retell the steps orally first, then have a go at writing the instructions.
  • Encourage them to draw pictures to match each step and check that their pictures and instructions are in the correct order.
