Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

I trust all is well with you and your family and welcome to the first edition of our school newsletter for Term Two. Throughout the last week or so, I have asked some of the children what they completed over the school holidays with the most common responses being:

Went to the movies – The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Hoppers, seemed like the most popular children’s movies
Went on day trips – Phillip Island was mentioned a few times and
Stayed at home, although had some ‘play dates’ with friends and/or family.

Regardless of what the children completed, I trust everyone is refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.

What’s happened at our school during the recent holidays?

The school holidays are the opportune time for tasks to be accomplished, and these holidays the following tasks were completed:

Updating the children’s classroom furniture. It is wonderful that we now have new furniture across the entire school! I am also thrilled that we were able to donate the furniture to schools in Papua New Guinea as this reflects our school values and the fact that we are an internationally minded school.
Continued developing our school’s garden beds – we planted more than 100 plants and spread close to 60 cubic meters of mulch and
Topped up the sandpits.

Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal

Once again, a sincere thank you to the entire school community for the outstanding support provided for this year’s Coin Race as it was absolutely fabulous to see the children and staff actively engaging in this event.

Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal- Glen Waverley Primary School’s Annual Coin Race Fundraiser

As a school that values global awareness and community connection, we believe it is important to acknowledge and support meaningful causes both around the world and close to home. Each year, Glen Waverley Primary School proudly supports the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, traditionally through our much-loved ‘Coin Race’.

I would like to sincerely thank the entire Glen Waverley Primary School community for your ongoing generosity and willingness to help others. The kindness and compassion shown by our families is truly appreciated and reflects the strong sense of care within our school community. The funds will be directly transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital, with their funds going towards world-class care, research, and equipment at the hospital and health services.

In total, this year our school raised an amazing, $2006.85 and the combined line lengths of all the coin lines came to a very impressive 268.50 meters, that’s one and a half times the length of the MCG!

The child selected to contact the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and pledge our school’s donation was Krish from 6A, as his family donated the most money raised in coins. Well done and thank you Krish and his family for doing so!

Curriculum Day

As you would be aware, last Wednesday we held our second Curriculum Day for the year, which proved to be highly successful. During the morning session, our focus was on Responsive Teaching, including:

A recap of the Simple Model of Memory
Understanding why students rely on highly responsive instruction
Exploring the Instructional Hierarchy and how teacher pedagogy shifts across different phases of learning, including appropriate scaffolds
Effective strategies for checking for understanding in Mathematics
Identifying target success rates across learning phases and determining next steps
Unpacking common mathematical representations, such as problem pairs and faded guidance
Strengthening Daily Review practices and
Refining teacher proximity, error correction, and feedback across different learning phases

The afternoon session was dedicated to preparation for our upcoming Council of International Schools (CIS) review.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all teaching and non-teaching staff for their professionalism and engagement throughout the day. I look forward to seeing these strategies implemented across our school.

School Photos

Thank you Theo

Theo (Year 5) is an avid reader and recently he decided to clean out his bedroom as it was overflowing with books. What did he do with his books? He decided to donate them to his (our) school. Attached is a photo of Theo and the books, incidentally, Theo also added the cost of each book which came to a staggering $1,854! Wow, thank you very, very, very much Theo as your spirit of generosity is incredible and something that we are all incredibly proud of!

Congratulations to our school chess team

Our school Chess Team recently competed in a tournament at Karingal Primary School and I am very proud to announce that the children finished in 1st place – well done and congratulations everyone!

Congratulations to the following children for their recent achievements:

It is wonderful that the children continue to pursue their interests outside of school, below are some of the most recent achievements:

Visual Arts – Manuja (Year Prep) loves drawing and recently he was awarded one of the Camp Australia “Big Art” Competition winners. Attached is a copy of Manuja’s certificate which includes a his amazing art work. Well done, congratulations and keep up your passion for all things Art Manuja!

Athletics – Anu (Year 5) is a very keen athlete and recently he shared that he participated in the Under 11’s events at the Springvale Little Athletics Club and received a Gold medal for the 100m, 400m, Discuss and Long Jump events!
Wow Anu, that is amazing – well done and keep it up!

Rubik’s Cube - Daham (Year 6) has been learning how to solve various Rubik cubes for many years and recently he participated in a competed in the West Melbourne Open.

I am thrilled to report that Daham qualified for the semifinals in the 3x3 event and was able to achieve a PR average of 13.06 seconds which is outstanding! Well done, congratulations and keep it up Daham!

Educational excellence – Aneel (Year 5) loves learning and recently she shared that she received Excellence Awards in both English and General Ability from her external assessment at James An College. Aneel has been working extremely hard and has been assessed at a Year 6 level. Well done and congratulations Aneel - keep up the amazing attitude towards your learning!

Cricket: Minza (Year 5) loves everything about cricket and I am really excited to announce that she has been selected for Victorian U14 Indoor Cricket Team! Wow, Minza, well done and congratulations as this is an amazing achievement and what makes it even more special, is that Minza is only 10 years old!

Minza, I look forward to sharing what you achieve throughout the year!

Chess – Manish (Year 5) is an avid chess player and recently he competed in the 2026 Doeberl Cup in Canberra, which is a premier Grand Prix chess tournament that features several divisions, including Premier, Major, Minor, Mini, and Under 1200s.

I am extremely excited and proud to report that Manish was awarded the Under 1200 Overall Medallion in the 2026 Mini Tournament and he placed a very commendable 3rd Place in the Blitz (Under 1600 category). Throughout the tournament he competed against numerous more experienced and strong players, many were older and higher rated as well.

Wow, Manish what an amazing accomplishment that reflects your dedication, consistent practice, and passion for chess. We are extremely proud of your dedication, performance and growth and look forward to what you achieve in the future! Well done and congratulations!

Student Learning Awards

As a school community it is very important that we acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful achievements of our staff, parents and students. One way of accomplishing this is by participating in award ceremonies throughout the year and at the end of each term. Our end of term award is provided by the Kiwanis Club of Waverley, and we are extremely grateful for their continued support to our school in the form of the Terrific Kids program. The program is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. At our school the teachers nominate one student from each area of the school – Preps, 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6.

Mary – Year 1	Congratulations Mary on receiving the Kiwanis Terrific Kids award! It has been a privilege to watch your personal growth and curious approach to learning throughout this term. You have settled into your new learning environment effortlessly, building strong connections with your peers and teachers. Your growing ability to recognise your emotions, communicate your needs verbally, and participate in our daily routines has been truly impressive. Well done Mary, I look forward to seeing how you continue to thrive this year!
Joshin – Year 3	Joshin is the winner of the Kiwanis Award in recognition of his kind heart, strong work ethic and the outstanding growth he has shown this year. He has approached his learning with determination and resilience, making impressive progress across all areas. Joshin is a thoughtful and caring class member who consistently looks out for others, especially those in need of a friend. He offers support freely, encourages his peers and contributes positively to our classroom community each day. Joshin leads by example through his compassion, respect and commitment to doing his best. Congratulations, Joshin!
Annora - Year 5	This award recognises Annora for being an exemplary student who excels in Mathematics and has shown wonderful improvement in English. She is highly motivated, loves learning, and approaches every task with enthusiasm and determination. Annora is kind, generous, and always willing to support her peers in their learning or when they face friendship challenges. She has a strong drive to lead by example, sharing her knowledge and modelling the values of care, respect, and excellence in all that she does. Well done, Annora!

Prep D	Selene - For her dedication and enthusiasm in learning, Selene is being recognised for her outstanding readiness to learn, confident participation, and positive attitude in the classroom. She has been working hard in Literacy, confidently identifying and practising the sounds we are learning, including /m/, /t/, and /s/, and she enjoys using these sounds when reading and writing. In Numeracy, Selene is developing a strong understanding of patterns and can clearly explain what comes first, next, and last when ordering and sequencing. She is also building confidence with measurement through sequencing, thoughtfully putting events and steps in order and explaining her thinking using sequencing language. 1B	Saatvick - The Principal’s Learning Award for Term 1 is proudly presented to Saatvick! 1D	Jinia - Congratulations to Jinia for demonstrating excellent whole-body listening and consistently showing respect throughout this term. You regularly display outstanding listening skills and a strong commitment to learning by following instructions carefully and promptly. You are always ready to respond, eager to participate, and set a wonderful example for others through your focus and responsibility. You have worked hard to stay on task at your table and complete your work with care. Your enthusiasm when sharing ideas during Mathematics and InitiaLit is wonderful to see. 2A	Milan - Milan, what an incredible start you’ve made to Year 2! From the very first weeks, you’ve shown just how eager you are to learn. Your curiosity shines every day. You ask thoughtful questions, you look for deeper meaning and you’re never afraid to explore an idea a little further. That spark you bring doesn’t just help you grow, it inspires the people around you to think more deeply too. You’ve also shown such genuine respect for your teachers and classmates. You make mature choices to stay focused and you bring a calm, positive energy into the room. One of the things that stands out most is the way you encourage others. You cheer your friends on, you help them when they’re stuck and you lead by example. It’s clear that your classmates look up to you! Your organisation has been outstanding as well. You come prepared and take responsibility for your materials, which allows you to ready to learn every single day. That level of independence is something to be really proud of! 2B	Milaan - Milaan has been an inspiration this term, showing kindness, compassion and diligence both towards his fellow classmates and schoolwork. He regularly shows a ‘growth mindset’ when completing unknown tasks and as a result is now able to tackle tasks independently. Keep up the wonderful work Milaan!
2C	Harper - Harper is a dedicated and conscientious learner who consistently strives to complete her work to the best of her ability. She shows a strong commitment to her learning, always willing to take responsibility and catch up on tasks if she has missed anything. Harper is a delightful member of our class who has built strong and positive friendships, contributing to a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. It has been wonderful to see her growing independence, particularly in the mornings, as well as the resilience she demonstrates when approaching her learning. Harper’s positive attitude and determination make her a truly deserving recipient of the Principal Learning Award.
2D	Seyara - Seyara, thank you for your diligence in learning. In learning time, you always strive to achieve your personal best, even when learning gets challenging. You model respect to not only your peers, but also your teacher as you listen to whoever is speaking. In learning, you always ask rich clarifying questions, which enhances all students' understanding. Keep up your dedication to learning Seyara! We are so lucky to have you as a part of 2D.
3A	Isaac - Congratulations Isaac on a fantastic term of learning! You have challenged yourself to achieve your best in all areas of the curriculum. You have listened and responded to teacher feedback and feedforward, which has led to the development of good learning habits, organisation and a positive outlook on your learning. Well done, and keep up the excellent attitude!
3B	George - George consistently does the right thing and makes thoughtful, positive choices each day. He always tries his very best in all areas of his learning and shows wonderful persistence, even when tasks feel challenging. George is a respectful and responsible member of our class, leading by example and serving as a positive role model to others. His kindness, determination and commitment to learning make him someone we are incredibly proud of. George approaches every opportunity with enthusiasm and a genuine love of learning, inspiring those around him to do the same. He should feel extremely proud of all that he has achieved through his hard work and positive attitude. Keep up the fantastic work, George, you are a star!
3C	Ruhani - Congratulations, Ruhani, on receiving the Principal Learning Award for Term 1! This is a wonderful achievement and a true reflection of your dedication and love of learning. Your curiosity and willingness to explore new ideas show how committed you are to doing your very best. I am consistently impressed by your focus during lessons, your excellent whole body listening, and the valuable contributions you make to our class discussions. You approach each day with readiness and responsibility, arriving organised and fully prepared for learning. You set a fantastic example for your peers. What stands out most this term is your positive attitude towards learning. You actively seek feedback, reflect on ways to improve, and confidently challenge yourself to grow. 3D	Melika - Melika is a kind, caring and enthusiastic member of our classroom who always takes the time to support and encourage those around her. She consistently demonstrates empathy and compassion, making sure her classmates feel included, supported and valued. Melika approaches all areas of her learning with determination and pride, always striving to produce work of the highest quality. Her strong work ethic and positive attitude towards learning allow her to achieve excellent results while continuing to challenge herself to improve. Melika is a wonderful role model for her peers, showing maturity beyond her years through her responsible behaviour and natural leadership. 3E	Dushaan - The Principal Learning Award goes to Dushaan. Dushaan, you have consistently demonstrated our school values of Integrity, Respect, Initiative and Global Empathy. You demonstrate integrity by consistently being honest and making responsible choices, and you show respect by listening attentively when following instructions. You show global empathy by caring for others and helping classmates when they are hurt or in need. In Literature, you have developed a strong passion for learning new and interesting vocabulary, such as precious and peculiar. In Literacy, you create engaging and imaginative stories about cyborgs, wolves and bears. In Mathematics, you confidently identify and use the correct units of time, and in Inquiry. You thoughtfully investigated why people choose to follow or not follow rules, showing curiosity and critical thinking. Congratulations on a wonderful term of learning, Dushaan. Keep it up!
4A	Amasha - Congratulations Amasha! Amasha consistently demonstrates the school value ‘Initiative’, by enthusiastically displaying helpfulness and willingness to assist within the classroom. She further applies empathy to others, by assisting her peers with her helpfulness. Amasha is courteous and polite and shows the utmost respect to all her teachers and fellow learners and understands that this value is important for all. She additionally is a wonderful team player, demonstrating great collaborative skills in learning and play, cooperating with others in a friendly manner. It has been wonderful to see Amasha’s confidence grow over the term. Amasha, you are a fantastic role model and we are so proud you are a member of 4A and GWPS!
4B	Aislyn - Aislyn, you have made a terrific start to Year Four in 2026. You are a student who always demonstrates the school values in everything you do. In the classroom, you consistently show respect in your interactions with teachers and classmate. Your work is always to a high standard and reflects your passion for learning. During class discussions, you are a role model to others with your willingness to share your voice without dominating conversations and allowing your peers to also have their say. In the playground, you try new things and ensure everyone feels included, particularly when you give your own time to be a part of activities such as Quiet Play. Aislyn, you are wonderful student and amazing friend who should be proud of the effort you have put forward in Term One. Congratulations on earning this award!
4C	Ryleigh - Ryleigh is a role model in the classroom who demonstrates exemplary behaviour and embodies our School Values of Respect and Initiative. She comes to school every morning with an attitude to try her best by setting herself up in the morning through a wellbeing check-in. She raises her hand and waits patiently on the floor when she shares her ideas and always delivers her gratitude with a “thank you.” Ryleigh takes initiative in the classroom by picking up rubbish every day and helping with class jobs, such as checking the class tub after lunch. As a friend, Ryleigh is a listener and supporter, who shares her unconditional loyalty and empathy towards her friends. She is organised and takes care of not only her own belongings, but classroom resources as well. Congratulations again Ryleigh on becoming such a wonderful member of the 4C community, outstanding work!
4D	Binuka - Binuka well deserves this principal award for showing integrity and initiative and upholding school values. He shows integrity and initiative by consistently trying his best in his class written work and by participating, completing and refining his work to an excellent level. Additionally, he consistently tries to change his behavior when prompted to apply class and school expectations. Congratulations Binuka on an amazing effort, especially for your outstanding attributes in class this term. Well Done!
4E	Thidas - Congratulations to Thidas! Your persistence when you are challenged with a question and your motivation to learn more about that topic is outstanding. Thidas you have shown great orderliness within the classroom, with making sure you are always ready for learning by providing me with whole body listening, and also having all your belongings you need for the day organised and easily accessible. You have shown wonderful dedication and persistence while working on your learning this semester, by asking thoughtful questions and and taking risks to achieve success. Keep up the incredible work Thidas!
4F	Alina - You are a focused and highly organised learner who consistently takes great pride in your schoolwork. Each task is approached with care, determination and a genuine commitment to achieving your very best. In addition, you are a kind and supportive member of our school community. You readily assists others, showing patience, encouragement and empathy in your interactions. The School Value of Respect is consistently demonstrated through your words, actions and positive attitude each day both inside the classroom and out. Thank you, Alina, for being such a wonderful role model in 4F. Your dedication and kindness are truly valued, and I look forward to seeing continued success in the future.
5A	Japnoor - Japnoor has been a hard-working learner this term, paying close attention to every lesson and putting 100% of effort into all learning tasks. She lives and breathes the 5A Legacy by being respectful, being on task and working well with others. Japnoor also demonstrates successful behaviour in class by communicating responsibly and listening attentively. Congratulations, Japnoor, a well-deserved recipient for the Term One Principal Learning Award! Keep up the great effort!
5B	Advait - This award goes to Advait, who has shown remarkable growth in his organisational skills this year, strengthening his independence and sense of responsibility in his learning. He is consistently focused and approaches challenges with resilience and a calm, determined mindset, setting a strong example for others. Advait also makes thoughtful contributions to classroom discussions, often thinking outside the box and offering insightful perspectives.
