In Inquiry this week, 1D began exploring the big question: How do my choices affect living things? In their first lesson, students reflected on their needs as learners and designed their own ideal learning spaces based on their preferences. We discussed how everyone has different likes, and that a successful learning environment should feel safe and comfortable for all.
In their second Inquiry lesson (see attached photo), students learned the difference between needs (things we require to live and learn) and wants (things we would like but do not need). They identified and recorded their own needs and wants for the classroom through drawings and writing in their Inquiry books and reflected on how following classroom expectations and demonstrating our school values helps to create a positive learning environment for everyone.
While reflecting on their learning, the following 1D Students shared:
Delwin: “Candy doesn’t mean I need to have it. Without candy, I can still live. I need a pencil so I can write things.”
Krish: “I want a pet, but I need a table and chair. If I don’t have anything to do, I can look at the pet. The pet is less important than the table because the table helps me write.”
Saravana: “I need a table and chair to sit and do my learning comfortably. Without a pet, I can still survive. I can learn without a pet.”
Myra: “I need light so I can see, a chair, and a lunchbox to put my lunch in. I want a bunny.”
