Associate Degree in Design (Furniture)
For students interested in furniture, the available study options can be limited. Certificate-level vocational courses generally concentrate on trade skills, while broader industrial design degrees may address furniture only through individual electives. RMIT developed the Associate Degree in Design (Furniture) to bridge this gap, combining intensive practical learning with design development, critical thinking and industry knowledge.
The two-year, full-time program offers:
- extensive hands-on learning, with approximately 23 contact hours each week
- small class sizes and access to specialist furniture workshops and facilities
- instruction from experienced furniture makers, designers and industry practitioners
- opportunities to develop skills across furniture design, prototyping and manufacture
- pathways into further study, including up to 1.5 years of credit toward selected RMIT Industrial Design and Architecture programs.
Students work on a diverse range of individual and industry-connected projects. Examples of current student projects and activities can also be viewed on Instagram at @furniture_rmit.
Each year, approximately 60 to 70 students commence the program, including students who relocate from interstate. As specialist furniture design and making programs are now relatively uncommon in Australia, this is a great option for students with an interest in this field.
Applications are made through the standard VTAC process. Applicants are selected through an application and folio demonstrating their design interests, skills and thinking. The folio does not need to focus specifically on furniture; it may include work from areas such as product design, technology, visual communication, art, architecture, model making or other creative projects.

Visitors will be able to explore the specialist Workshop facilities, view student work and speak directly with teaching staff and current students about the program, application process and career pathways.
