LOTE (French)

Prep–Year 2 🇫🇷🇨🇦

Our Prep–Year 2 students have been busy building their French vocabulary and conversation skills! We have been learning about the weather and animals in French, while also practising how to put our ideas into full sentences. We have now begun exploring the topic of friends, learning simple phrases and questions that allow us to have short conversations with one another in French. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident using French to communicate!

Years 3–6 🇫🇷🇨🇦

Our Years 3–6 students have continued reading stories by our French author, Robert Munsch. We have been developing our understanding of the beginning, middle and end of a story in French, while exploring the different elements that make up a story, including characters, setting and key events.

Next week, students will begin working on their Paper Bag Book Report assessment, where they will put their French storytelling and comprehension skills into practice.

Performing Arts 

The Curriculum Focus in Performing Arts 

Prep: Students have continued learning about the elements of drama and acting. They have been focussing on the different ways we can use our voice e.g. pitch, tone, volume, emotion. Students have enjoyed playing the game “Greetings Your Majesty” where they disguise their voice to trick students as to who is talking. This week they have started playing with finger puppets and have tried out using a different voice to suit their character.

Year 1: Students have played the drama games: “Wax Museum”, “Who am I?” and “One Minute Objects” which have focussed on using their whole body to create drama. This week they have been looking at the use of masks and the different types of masks. Students have enjoyed playing the drama game, “Exaggeration” and have learnt the importance of using big, exaggerated movements while performing with masks.

Grade 2: Students have been learning about different types of puppets. They have worked in small groups to retell a well-known fairytale using a character voice and a 1-dimensional puppet. This week they have started learning about shadow puppets. Students have been assigned an Aesop Fable to act out and rehearse using shadow puppets. They will perform these for the class in a couple of weeks.

Grade 3/4: Students have started learning about improvisation in drama. They have played games that focus on the use of imagination and quick thinking e.g. Word tennis, 2 truths and a lie, and 3 words. Students have also worked in small groups to create and share drama from a starting line (One Line Improvisation) and with a partner to continue a dialogue. Their improvised scenes have had to show character, relationship and plot.

Grade 5/6: Students have been doing improvisation in drama. They have played games that focus on the use of imagination and quick thinking e.g. Word tennis, 2 truths and a lie, and 3 words. Students have also worked in small groups to create drama from a starting line (One Line Improvisation). This week students have read a play called “The Discussion Period” which is an unfinished play. Students have broken off into groups to start work on ideas to continue and finish the play while keeping the 

characters consistent.

Music Clubs – 

Week 7: 5/6C Whole School Assembly 28/08

The Rock Band will have their first performance near the start of the Whole School Assembly after lunch.

Week 8: 5/6B Whole School Assembly 4/9

The Marimba Band will have their first performance.

The Choir will have their second performance for the year.

*NB – For students in the Music Clubs, please ensure they have/or wear their music tshirts on their performance day.

Each club are also working on learning and preparing some new songs to perform later in the year.

Visual Art

It’s been another busy two weeks, and we can’t believe it’s already halfway through the term! Over the next two weeks all classes will be finishing off their art show pieces and ‘Crazy Camel’ artwork. Orders for this fundraiser will open on October 21st so we have plenty of time to finish them off and pass them onto the Crazy Camel Company to be scanned and ready to order.

Grade Prep

We had lots of fun experimenting with paper clay to create our unique spiders. We decided to come up with our own designs which allowed every student to put their own creative spin on their spiders. This display was created in three stages, and the spiders were the final pieces. They look so amazing and colourful.

Grade 1

This week we finished our Crazy Camel art pieces and continued to work on our birds. I can’t wait to see these come together. We will add the final touches in our next lesson where we will add feathers, skewers and the base. 

Grade 2

Our Australian animal portraits are nearly finished, and they look bright and colourful. The students have really enjoyed working with 3D elements and patterned paper. Their colour choices and overall designs have been well thought out. 

Grade 3/4

The Grade 3/4’s are putting the final touches on their various retro art pieces, and I’m impressed with their skills and use of technique. There are some fun hidden ‘easter eggs’ on the records so make sure you look out for them at the Art Show. The 3/4M students have had to put up with my poor singing when I was allocating the songs they added to their logo designs. I was pleased to hear that some students knew some of the songs we were adding! A few students have completed all their assigned tasks and have been given an additional activity to complete. They are working on some Pacman designs on paper bags to form part of our retro display,

3/4T are making lava lamps

3/4B are making disco balls

3/4M are creating vinyl look records 

3/4P are designing roller skates

3/4S will make mini square paintings of retro objects.

Grade 5/6

This week we finished our zentangle focal points to add to our fantastic ‘Gelli’ plate prints. Then we moved onto our ‘Crazy Camel’ art pieces. I love the way students have gathered all the techniques we have learnt and put them on display in their artwork! A few students have completed all their assigned tasks and have been given an additional activity to complete. They are working on our paintbrush people where they are adding paper clay to create a 3D face. Some students will have the choice to add paint and paint pens to their design.

We are looking for…..

We are looking for full sized Coles, Aldi and Woolworths paper bags. These will be deconstructed and turned into portfolios for each student to use to take home their amazing artworks for the year!

Art club

The Art Club voted to do some free drawing this week. They were allowed to choose their supplies to create whatever they wanted. They love the free choice theme!!!

Art club is available to different year levels each term. The schedule for 2026 will be as follows:

Art smocks

Just a reminder to bring in your Art smocks. Please hand them into your classroom teacher for storage. I recommend an old, oversized t-shirt or shirt with your child’s name on it.

Students are tracking the ball, cushioning it underfoot and changing direction into space.

Students are communicating, covering space and choosing when to pass, run or reset.

Students are using width, support lines and team roles to create a forward option.

WPS FINISHED 3RD OVERALL!

What a district carnival. Congratulations to every Willy Kid who competed, supported a teammate or cheered from the sidelines. Every race, jump, throw and relay helped WPS finish third overall.
