Year One Team News
with Emma & Carolyn
What a wonderful and busy week it has been in Grade 1. The students have been incredibly focused as they completed their Year 1 Phonics Check. We are looking forward to a fantastic incursion with author and illustrator Sarah Allen, and we cannot wait to see everyone dressed up this Friday for Book Week.
Welcome Carolyn Bones
This week, we warmly welcomed Carolyn Bones into the Year 1 teacher team. She is already settling beautifully into 1K. Please note that Carolyn is in the process of adjusting to the technology platform of a new school and as soon as her system access is finalised, she will send out a formal communication to all 1K families. The students in 1K have already shown a lot of enthusiasm and excitement, and we are thrilled to have her as a part of our team.
Swimming
There is already a great deal of excitement about our upcoming swimming program. Starting on Thursday 3rd September, in Week 8, we swim every day for 7 days at Sweeney’s Swim Centre in Altona. The event is open on Compass for you to provide consent and payment for your child to attend. Please return the medical form that went home last week. If you have signed up to help us please remember to complete the online Parent Helper Induction and have a valid WWCC, sighted by the office to attend. We appreciate everyone who has signed on so far, we cannot run this program without your support, thank you!
Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7-8
Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Next week we will be learning about the soft ‘c’ sound when followed by an e, i or y. In week 8 we will be learning about the e_e as in delete and e as in me.
Writing: In writing we are going to begin publishing our narrative piece based around the theme of travel. In Week 8 we will begin writing and publishing a special keepsake project to celebrate special role models in our lives.
Numeracy: Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on measurement. We will be measuring and comparing lengths, masses and capacities of objects using informal units. In week 7 we will finish our final component of our measurement unit which is capacity. Then we will begin revising all the concepts we have already learned this term.
Inquiry: Our topic this term is around Geography. So far we have ‘travelled’ Australia, England, France and Italy. During the remainder of the term we will be learning about other countries including their geography, cultures and celebrations.
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids Display Perseverance". We will be learning to understand what perseverance is and discussing how to use it to overcome difficulties in the classroom, in the yard and at home. Our focus for Respectful Relationships this term is “Positive Gender Relationships”.
Warm regards,
The Grade One Team – Emma Chang-Kum (1C) & Carolyn Bones (1K)
