Year 3/4 Team News

Hello Year  3/4 families,   

It’s hard to believe we are already over halfway through the term – it’s gone so quickly!

We’ve been delighted and impressed by some of the poems our students have written during our poetry unit. We’ve shared some below for you to read and enjoy.

Grade 4 Bike Education – Parent Helpers

Information about our Bike Education program was sent to Grade 4 parents this week. We will need parent helpers with their own bikes to assist with our Bike Education sessions, particularly when we leave the school for an afternoon ride around Williamstown.

If you are able to help, please sign up at Volunteer Signup and enter your name for the session/s you are available to attend.

Literacy

Students are continuing with our Poetry unit. They will read and explore a variety of poems, using these as mentor texts to develop their comprehension skills.

Poetry also continues to be the focus in Writing. Students will explore different poetic forms and literary devices before creating and publishing their own poems.

Numeracy – Chance and Probability

During Weeks 7 and 8, students will begin learning about chance and probability. They will conduct repeated chance experiments, identify and describe possible outcomes, record results, and recognise and discuss variations.

Students will also explore practical activities and everyday events involving chance. They will describe outcomes as likely or unlikely, identify events as certain or impossible, and explain the reasoning behind their predictions.

Inquiry

Our Term 3 inquiry question is:

“What does living sustainably look like in our local community?”

This fortnight, students will investigate sustainability in housing and begin designing an eco-friendly house that incorporates sustainable features and ideas.

Willy Kids

This term's focus is "Willy Kids are Resilient."

Students will develop strategies for:

• managing emotions
• showing courage
• bouncing back from challenges
• persevering
• maintaining a positive mindset.

Respectful Relationships

This term, students are exploring gender norms and stereotypes. They will develop an understanding of how stereotypes in the media and literature influence beliefs about gender, while learning to recognise and challenge negative gender stereotypes within their school and wider community.

Homework

Homework provides valuable opportunities for students to consolidate their learning and develop positive habits for lifelong learning.

Homework is distributed on Monday and is due back at school each Friday.

Weekly homework includes:

• Reading – Read for at least 15 minutes on four nights each week. Students should record the titles of the books they have read on their homework sheet.
• Mathematics – Play the number games introduced in class to strengthen number sense and revise learnt skills. This term, there is also a focus on learning multiplication facts:
  • Grade 3: 2s, 4s, 5s and 10s
  • Grade 4: all multiplication tables.
• Spelling – Complete suggested activities using the words your child has selected.
• Writing – Complete a short writing task in the Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book to complete and return each week. If you have any questions or concerns about homework, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.

We can’t wait to see the costumes and outfits the Grade 3/4 students wear to the Book Parade tomorrow!
