Year 5/6 Team News

Hello Year 5/6 families, 

Purple Party Leadership Day is coming on Tuesday 25th August! After taking out the Term 2 Election, Purple Party, "Willy as One,” have planned and negotiated with Mat and Lisa how they will implement their policies on this day. The day will involve:

• Elected Leaders placed in the office for the day, shadowing Mat, Lisa, Puhie and Anna
• Ministers for Education announcing the popular policy for a 1 hour recess break in addition to lunch (for purple day only, 10:30 eating time, 10:40-11:30 recess break) 
• Uniform Drive conducted by the Social Services Ministers
• Ministers for Arts & Culture to work with 5/6 team on Inquiry planning
• Ministers for Health and Finance to work with Christina on wheelchair fundraiser proposal
• Ministers for Sport to move portable goals to oval for recess and lunch breaks
• Ministers for Environment to announce whole school clean up at 2:20pm

We look forward to a great day celebrating Willy as One and their initiatives as a whole school. 

Students will also have opportunities to sign up for our annual Footy Day. The 5/6's have an important role in shaping the day by helping run the morning's assembly, train and coach the 3/4 football and netball teams, conduct junior school activities, work as marshals and event coordinators, scorers, umpires and much more. It is a big job, but many hands make light work and our 5/6 students always show how wonderful a student-led event can be for our school. We look forward to getting the ball rolling in preparation. 

Student Voice: We have had many students off at different events over the past few weeks, including Regional AFL, District Athletics and Regional Hockey. We look forward to hearing from some student authors in our next newsletter (Week 8). 

What's Coming up in the Classroom in Term 3:

Reading: In Weeks 7 and 8, students are continuing to read and view texts with the intention of understanding an author's purpose and the main idea of their text. Students will also be reading the final chapter of the class novel, "Bridge to Terabithia," and will enjoy making comparisons between the text and the film. Students will also be discussing the author's purpose through exploration of themes within the texts. 

Writing: In Week 7, students are learning to paragraph narrative texts. They will practise with given texts and apply this skills to their own narrative writing. In Week 8, students will be given the opportunity to write the ending to one of Chris Van Allsburg's texts. They will focus on ensuring they develop their paragraphing skill, in conjuction with descriptive writing skills. 

Numeracy: In Week 7, students will begin our next unit on Probability. They will learn to discuss the probability of independent and dependent events using fractions, decimals and percentages. In Week 8, we will be completing a variety of problem solving tasks to help consolidate our number skills and the concepts taught so far this year. 

Inquiry: In Weeks 7 and 8, students will be working on their personal research project, a visual and oral presentation, comparing 2 places around the world. They will be using planning templates and ensuring their topic has been approved by their teacher. This project will become embedded into our literacy work over the next fortnight, allowing students time to learn how to research by gathering sources of information and presenting this evidence in a personal way. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Weeks 7 and 8, Willy Kids Persevere. Students will read the text, "Rosie Revere, Engineer," and reflect on their own times of needing to pick themselves up and try again. They will award themselves a Rosie Revere Seal of Approval. In Respectful Relationships, students are continuing to recognise ways in which gender norms are influenced in society and the changes to this over time, promoting a more inclusive society.

Hosting Whole School Assembly:

Please note the change in whole school assembly for W6 due to Book Week Parade. W7 will be the next whole school assembly. 

• Week 7- 5/6C

• Week 10- Footy Day Assembly (5/6 team and students)

Term 4 Reminders: 

A letter will be coming home before the end of term highlighting the many dates/events coming up in Term 4. There are many things to be across and costs associated. We aim to give you as much notice as possible to support and assist with planning ahead.

Week 3: Parent Info Night for 5/6 SEA Health Prorgram (Tues 20th Oct, 6:30pm via Zoom)

Week 4: Grade 5 Camp: Mon 26th-Wed 28th October 

Week 4: Grade 6 Camp: Wed 28th-Fri 30th October
