Dear Families and Carers,

We have had a very exciting few weeks in Foundation! Our Finchaburras have enjoyed a range of special events and learning experiences, while continuing to build their skills and confidence in the classroom. Here’s a snapshot of what we have been learning and experiencing:

📖 Book Week

Thank you so much to our parents and guardians for supporting our Finchaburras to dress up as their favourite book characters. Our Book Week Assembly was a wonderful celebration of stories, and we also had the opportunity to attend the Clayton Library Book Week production, where students had lots of fun watching, dancing and singing along!

🔬 Science Week

During Science Week, our Finchaburras became little scientists as they explored the Seeds of Science. Students investigated different types of seeds using their senses. They used magnifying glasses to observe closely, shook seeds to listen to the sounds they made, and used touch and smell to make observations and record their findings.

🎶 Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Despite the drizzly weather, our Finchaburras had a fantastic time attending the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with the Year 1/2 students. Through Carnival of the Animals, students explored animals through music and movement, joined in with different beats and responded to a variety of musical sounds. It was a wonderful experience for our students to enjoy live music together!

📚 English

Phonics: We have reached a very exciting milestone — we have now learnt all of the graphemes in the Foundation curriculum!  Students are now focusing on applying their knowledge of digraphs in their reading and writing, becoming more confident with blending, reading and spelling words. 

Reading: Students are developing their comprehension by exploring more challenging vocabulary and digging deeper into stories using the five question words: what, when, where, why and how. They are learning to use information from the text to explain their thinking.

Writing: We are moving into the drafting and publishing stage of our persuasive writing pieces. It has been wonderful to see our Finchaburras confidently express their opinions and provide reasons to support what they believe!

🔢 Maths

Over the past few weeks, students have been exploring equal sharing through hands-on activities and real-life scenarios. They particularly enjoyed making fair shares between friends using different manipulatives. We have also been learning about collecting and recording data, using simple tables and tallies to gather information and organise our findings. We have also begun exploring 3D shapes, discovering that a shape can look different depending on how it is positioned.

🌦️ Inquiry

We are getting close to completing our final artworks for our Weather and Seasons Inquiry unit. Students have worked incredibly hard throughout the unit and are excited to share their learning. Our Go Public event is coming up next week, where parents and guardians will have the opportunity to see the wonderful learning and artwork our Finchaburras have created.

It has certainly been a busy and exciting few weeks! We are incredibly proud of our Finchaburras and look forward to celebrating their learning with you next week.
