We were fortunate to welcome back former St Philip’s student Courtney Summers, who shared her powerful and deeply personal journey with our students last term.

Courtney spoke openly about her experience battling mental illness, taking us through the highs and lows of her life. From being an elite athlete to suffering a mental illness, and now to successfully running her own mental health clothing brand, Sumtimessad.

Courtney’s honesty helped break down stigma and encouraged students to think more openly about mental health and seeking support.

Throughout last term and continuing into this semester, our Year 9 students have been exploring mental health and wellbeing. This includes developing an understanding of different mental health conditions, as well as building strategies to strengthen resilience and cope with challenges.

A key message from Courtney’s presentation was the importance of recognising what we can control and what we can’t control. This simple but powerful idea encouraged students to focus their energy on their own actions, mindset, and support systems, rather than becoming overwhelmed by things outside of their control.

“Through the good days and bad.” Courtney Summers
