Welcome back to all of our 10-12 families. I hope that a well-deserved break was had by all, and that students are fresh and ready to go for the term.
This is also a friendly reminder to our Year 12 students that this is effectively the last term of their school careers. VCE students enrolled in scored subjects will sit their VCAA exams towards the start of Term 4, and it is important that they keep up with work so that they can be as prepared as possible for these important assessments.
Pathways for Progress information night
This term, Year 9 and 10 students will begin the process of selecting subjects for 2027. Year 9 students will be required to select a VET course, and some may have the opportunity to accelerate in a VCE subject. Year 10 students will be required to select their courses and subjects that they will undertake in Year 11.
To start the conversation with students and families, Pathways for Progress information evening will be held on Monday 27th July at 6.30 pm. A flyer has been distributed to all students in Years 9 and 10, and a digital copy has been posted on Compass. On the night, information will be presented regarding course options, and students will have the opportunity to discuss subject options with VCE staff.
Tertiary Information Service
The Year 12 students attended the Charlton TIS event on Monday this week, where they had the opportunity to be introduced to the tertiary application process (VTAC, as well as other application methods) and discuss some course outlines with a variety of institutions. Charlton College and the rest of the schools in the area are extremely fortunate to have access to this event, as quite often we need to travel long distances for this sort of service.
Over the course of Term 3, the Year 11 and 12 students will begin spending more concentrated time on their tertiary and career planning, including access to open days, scholarships and applications for courses.
VTAC accounts open for registrations from Monday 3rd August 2026, and Year 12 students will be invited to attend a special information evening with a parent/guardian to open their account. More information will be delivered closer to the time through Compass.

Help your child choose senior subjects!
The subject selection process is an exciting part of your child's education journey. It allows them to reflect on how the subjects they study at school affect their future career path. If your child knows what they want to study after leaving school, they can identify a number of courses to explore. Each provider and each course has prerequisites that students must meet. So it's important that you & your child are aware of these.
Your child should choose subjects that:
enable them to work from their strengths
challenge them to make the most of their capabilities
provide them with the qualification they need to pursue their ambitions after school
are enjoyable while they study offer a range of study that is manageable, with a balance between theoretical and practical subjects
provide life skills
are their choice and not the choice of others.
Who to talk to:
The course counsellor/s at your child's school will be able to give advice on choosing senior school subjects. Including:
required for entry to university
related to particular occupations
required for VET courses.
Other people who can also assist your child include: Subject teachers, Indigenous education workers, parents, friends, lecturers and teachers at universities and TAFEs, students who are currently studying the subjects your child is interested in, employers, people in an industry organisation that interests your child, role models/people in the career of their choice.
Open days
Most university and TAFEs have open days (usually throughout August). You can speak to staff & current students about courses and university/TAFE life.
Encourage them to look back at their achievements
It will be important for your child to think about their achievements. They should identify:
the subjects they have done well in or not so well
what their achievements tell them about their abilities
