Researching and Investigating about our Natural World
This term, the Banksia Blue children have continued their curiosity to observe the snails that were appearing throughout the Banksia garden as the warmer weather approached. We invited the children to share their ideas and theories about the snails, and they were delighted to discover a special enclosure for their new garden companions. The children’s curiosity soon blossomed into a sense of responsibility as they considered how to care for the snails’ wellbeing. This sparked rich discussions about providing suitable food, creating a comfortable habitat and ensuring their tiny visitors were safe and cared for. Through these gentle encounters, the children began to nurture a deeper appreciation for living things and our responsibility to care for the natural world.
Snail Observations
Audrey: They are climbing. One is coming out. Baby one. Soft. Sliding. It’s like round and round and round. Look at that big shell. It’s huge. Tentacles. Eyes. They are doing a race. The big one is gonna win (Pointing to the snail slime). That one is going with him. That one is not even falling.
Imogen: Snail’s sleeping.
Cornelia: They go under and they sleep. It’s like round and round. He’s sleeping. I think he’s having a tea party. Because there are monsters in the tunnel.
Jack: Snail walking. Look!
Sybil: They have a shell on the back. They have a trail. The snail just left a trail there. The big one is going that way. The other one is going all the way there. That is going through the tunnel. The little snail is on the big snail. He’s coming back out of the tunnel. He’s scared of the tunnel.
Isabel: Snail. Soft. They are moving.
Oscar: It feels warm.
Ahura: Soft. Warm.
