Learning Across the

Senior School

Youth Governor’s Leadership Foundation

Throughout the year, I was lucky enough to participate in the Youth Governor’s Leadership Foundation program, sponsored by an Old Scholar, Emily Quinn. Throughout this course, I worked in a group, and we focused on the fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal: Quality Education. We learnt that 100% of schools in rural South Australia face baseline funding gaps, and many don’t have the resources they need for a quality education. After learning this, our group partnered with Kick Start for Kids and found ways we could help make a difference.

The Youth Governor's Leadership Foundation taught me how to become a better leader and helped me feel more confident in in public speaking and in my own leadership abilities. I learnt that being a leader isn't always about being the loudest or most confident person in the room; it is about taking action and standing up for what you believe in. It was a great experience. I learnt so much and am very grateful for the opportunity.

Year 9 Students Making a Difference

Our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh's International Award students recently volunteered with HeartKids, working alongside Ms Sami Glastonbury to prepare craft activities for children participating in the Early Childhood Intervention program.

Through their volunteering, the girls are making a meaningful contribution to the community while developing their teamwork, creativity and sense of social responsibility. Their efforts reflect the spirit of service at the heart of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, demonstrating how small acts of kindness can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Carbon Farming

Armed with just a tape measure, our Year 9 Science students headed into the school grounds to estimate how much carbon is stored in a tree by estimating its dry weight. This practical activity helped the girls understand the crucial role trees play in the carbon cycle and the far-reaching impacts of deforestation. There were also many opportunities for a tree hug!

Year 8 Science

Decorating an arrowroot biscuit with an atomic symbol for an element was a fun, creative and delicious way for our Year 8 Science students to learn about atoms and elements. As they explored the structure of an atom, they became familiar with the symbols used to represent different elements on the periodic table.

Simple Machines

Our Year 7 Science students explored simple machines, including levers, pulleys and inclined planes, to deepen their understanding of forces and how simple machines can make tasks easier, including lifting heavy objects. By designing and building their own simple machines and incorporating peer feedback, the students were highly engaged while developing valuable problem-solving and engineering skills.

Debating Success

Congratulations to our Year 12 Senior A Debating team, who reached the finals of the South Australian Debating Association (SADA) Year 12 competition, held at Parliament House.

Competing against some of South Australia’s schools, including Prince Alfred College, St Peter’s College, Scotch College, Saint Ignatius’ College and Pembroke School, the team demonstrated exceptional skill, preparation and teamwork to reach the finals against Saint Ignatius’ College. While Loreto narrowly missed out on the title, Grace C was awarded Best Speaker in recognition of her outstanding debating ability.

Comprising Grace C, Lucy D, Aleeza K and Grace B (Year 11), the team achieved a remarkable milestone, taking Loreto to the SADA Year 12 finals for the first time since 2008. This was a wonderful achievement and a fitting reminder of the talent, determination and intellectual curiosity our students bring to every challenge. Congratulations to Grace, Lucy, Grace and Aleeza!
