Sport & Co-Curricular

Introducing new scholarship for 2027
Co-Curricular Sport Scholarship for Years 6, 11 and 12 (current students only)
The new Co-Curricular Sport Scholarship recognises current Loreto College Marryatville students who have demonstrated commitment, excellence and growth in a chosen co-curricular activity. It celebrates their sustained involvement and provides support towards the associated costs of participation.
Each year, one scholarship will be awarded to a Junior School student (Year 6) and one to a Senior School student (Year 11 or Year 12). The scholarship covers the costs associated with the chosen activity for one year only.
Applications for Co-Curricular Sport Scholarship close on Friday 13 November 2026.

Students Achievements
Congratulations to Eloise (Year 10) and Grace (Year 10) who recently travelled to Borneo to compete in a soccer tournament. They represented South Australia brilliantly, returning home with silver medals. Well done, Eloise and Grace!

Year 2 Netball
Loreto had two brand new netball teams take the court last Friday, with our Year 2 Pink and Green teams unleashed on an unsuspecting EDNA Netta 5 competition.
Coaches Jacqui, Jessica, Gabrielle, Maddison and Catia have done a great job helping the girls prepare and there was a huge crowd in attendance on a perfect evening.
It’s fair to say that our teams dazzled! They were stringing passes together, working as a team and running to space. It wasn’t long before they were celebrating goals and exchanging high-fives. The whistle blew and we were ahead – so lots of hugging, laughing and cheering. We had to remind the players that there were three more quarters to go. The coaches managed to keep a lid on things during the breaks (not easy!) and we continued on our merry way.
A couple of wins, a team song, lollies and a group photo – what could be better?! We hope that our Year 2s love their first season playing netball for the school and that it becomes a passion that stays with them throughout their school years and beyond.

The Torso Rule
One of Australia’s greatest ever Olympic performances was by Debbie Flintoff-King in the 400m hurdles at Seoul in 1988. At the final bend, Flintoff-King was in 5th position and had only an outside chance of winning a medal. She never gave up and gained ground in the final metres. Crucially, she remembered her training and technique at the key stage, leaning forward as she crossed the finish line. Her opponent from the Soviet Union – exhausted and thinking the race was won – leaned backwards.
The Olympic rule book has “The Torso Rule” to help decide close finishes, where only the torso (chest, abdomen, pelvis, and back) count towards crossing the finish line. By leaning forward, Flintoff-King crossed the line first and finished 0.01 seconds ahead of her opponent. Gold… gold… gold Australia!
We had our own photo-finish at our LORETOlympics event on Thursday. Flora managed to snare second place in the 50m sprint after a perfect Debbie Flintoff-King impression at the finish line!
Here is the youtube video of Debbie Flintoff-King’s famous victory, with commentary from Bruce McAvaney.
AFLW Winners
Well done to our Year 4/5/6 football team who picked up their first win on Tuesday against Saint Ignatius' College, winning 8.8 (56) to 1.0 (6). Several of our players are in their first season of football and are taking to the game well. Well done also to Evie, Courtney, Georgia and Ella who have been selected in the East Adelaide SAPSASA AFLW team for the state carnival this term.
Basketball
Our two Year 3/4 basketball teams the Slam Dunkers and the Swish have started the term well, picking up wins at the State Basketball Centre under the guidance of coaches Vanessa, Avreen and Jess.
Aerobics
Ms Woods and Ms Lange ran an introductory aerobics session for our Year 3 students on Wednesday morning this week. "Ms Woods, how many Year 3s did you end up with?" I enquired later that day. “Umm… almost all of them I think.” Fantastic to see this level of interest!
