Boarding Life

Lanterns On!

On Thursday, 22 October, we gathered in the Boarding House to celebrate the graduation of 19 Year 12 boarders, joined by their proud families and members of the College Executive and Leadership Teams.

Graduation is a significant occasion in Boarding. These girls have shared more than classrooms and school experiences. They have shared bedrooms, meals, celebrations, challenges and the everyday routines of living together. Their departure will leave a considerable space in our House, not least because this particular cohort has been full of personality!

As I reflected during our Graduation Dinner, these spirited girls have brought us laughter, robust debate and plenty of opportunities to remind them that bedtime is, in fact, a time to go to bed!

Our farewell gift to each graduate included a lantern, inspired by the song Lanterns by Birds of Tokyo. Throughout their years at Loreto, families, teachers, boarding staff and friends have helped light their way. Even the routines they have sometimes resisted have served a purpose, providing the safety, structure and support needed to grow.

Now, as they move beyond the familiar structures of school life, it is their turn to light their own path. As I reminded the girls, a lantern does not need to illuminate the whole journey. It only needs to provide enough light to take the next step.

We thank our graduating boarders for their contribution to our community and wish each of them every happiness as they begin their next chapter.

It is no longer "lights out". It is lanterns on!
