NUMERACY

This term in Numeracy, we are focusing on developing students’ problem-solving skills through our ‘Launch, Explore, Summarise’ lessons. This approach encourages students to think deeply, explain their reasoning, collaborate with others, and build confidence in applying a range of strategies to solve unfamiliar mathematical problems.

Launch (Before): The teacher introduces a challenging, often open-ended task, activating prior knowledge and clarifying expectations without revealing the solution method.

Explore (During): Students work independently or collaboratively to investigate the problem, test strategies, and grapple with mathematical ideas, while the teacher observes and provides differentiated support through enabling and extending prompts.

Summarise (After): The teacher facilitates a discussion where students share and compare strategies, make connections between different approaches, and consolidate key mathematical concepts.

We were also fortunate to have mathematics education consultant Michael Minas visit our classrooms this term. Michael worked alongside students and teachers during Numeracy lessons, providing valuable insights into problem-solving strategies and encouraging students to confidently explain and justify their mathematical thinking.

It has been wonderful to see our students demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and confidence in sharing and explaining their mathematical thinking throughout these problem-solving lessons.
