Japanese Term 2

Term 2 Japanese Program has started in a very positive way. Year 3 students have completed their first speech about their eating habits. Year 4 students have completed speeches about their hobbies in Japanese. Year 5 and 6 students have recorded speeches about their favourite Australian animals in Japanese and some students further extended their Japanese skills by creating an additional speech about native Japanese animals such as the Japanese macaque and the Iriomote Mountain Cat. Two students from each year level will present their speeches at the next school assembly.

This term, the Year 4 High Ability Japanese Class and two Year 5 and 6 classes will participate in a Zoom meeting with primary schools in Japan. Some students will present their speeches, and we will also listen to speeches in English from the Japanese students. This opportunity will allow students to use their Japanese language skills to communicate with primary school students in Japan who are learning English. Year 5 and 6 High Ability students are also filming themselves to create a video introducing Lucas Primary School in Japanese with English subtitles. We will share this video at a school assembly once it is completed.

This year, we introduced Katakana Karate Belt Program for the students who completed the Hiragana Black Belt. Congratulations Elias and Leon in 4A, Archie, Ishaan and Nihal 4B, Dominic and Yuven 4C, Angad 5/6D and James 5/6G who have received the Hiragana Katakana Master badge. Their Hiragana and Katakana recognition skills are at the end of Yea 8 level and they are able to read books written in Hiragana and Katakana characters freely. Now they are in “Hiragana Katakana Master’s Challenge” to develop further skills. This challenge allows the students to be able to read Manga books as well as acquiring some relevant vocabularies in Japanese.

Also, the Hiragana and Katakana Karate Belt Program continues to expand, not only among senior students but also junior students. Congratulations to Matthew in 1C for becoming the first Year 1 student, and Avery in 2A for becoming the first Year 2 student, to receive the Black Hiragana Belt Certificate. Atticus in 4B and Angel in 5/6C have also received the Black Hiragana Belt Certificate.

Visiting Japanese University Student

We also have exciting news that Lucas Primary School will host a Japanese university student from Saturday 8 August for approximately 3–4 weeks. She will support the Japanese program by assisting students and introducing Japanese culture to classes. She will obtain a Working with Children Check before beginning at Lucas Primary School.

Can you help?

We are currently looking for host families who would welcome her not as a guest, but as part of their family. The family would need to provide a bedroom, three meals a day, and transport to Lucas Primary School (for example, walking with your child). The host family will receive financial support for the duration of the stay.

If you are interested, please ask your child to collect further information from Mrs Mori.
