Student Learning Term 2

Year 2

The Year 2 students have been busy learning, creating and collaborating across all areas of the curriculum this term.

Our gardeners and chefs have loved harvesting spinach, chives and silver beet from our garden beds before preparing and sharing delicious “Easy Tomato Pasta” together each Monday.

Reyansh in 2A shared, “It was fun cooking the pasta to share with our friends.” With only two weeks of pasta-making left, students are already excited to plant new seeds and begin a brand-new recipe adventure! If you have a favourite family recipe or gardening tips to share, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Mel Young.

In Numeracy, students have been exploring part/part/whole relationships to create fact families and solve addition and subtraction problems. The Tug-of-War game has been a class favourite, helping students practise new strategies in a fun and engaging way. Anna in 2C said, “It’s a fun game to practise our addition.”

In Reading, students have been building their comprehension skills by answering questions and responding to their “just right” texts. In Writing, students have been extending their vocabulary to create rich character descriptions for our published class book inspired by the book "I'm Green and I'm Grumpy".

In Integrated Studies, students have been exploring how homes and buildings have changed throughout history, from caves and nomadic shelters to towns and important landmarks. We have also begun investigating significant Ballarat sites such as the Eureka Rebellion, Ballarat Town Hall, Lake Wendouree and Arch of Victory. Drew in 2D explained, “Here is a tent beside an old building back in the olden days. The olden days people lived in tents.” Students are eagerly looking forward to our upcoming excursion, where we will explore the history of our community and begin creating our own version of Ballarat.

Year 3

We’ve had a very pleasing start to the term in Year 3, with many exciting learning opportunities. Students have embraced these experiences and are rising to the challenge.

In Reading, we have explored a range of rich mentor texts and used different comprehension strategies to guide our learning. Our focus texts so far, Anzac TedGorilla and I Want My Hat Back have provided opportunities for students to analyse and critique text features, make meaningful connections and summarise key ideas.

I liked I Want My Hat Back because the characters were funny, and the bear got really angry when he realised who stole his hat. The whole page went red,” (Mac, 3C).

In Writing, students explored rich vocabulary through a variety of poetry styles, including Cinquain, Diamante and Haiku. Our overarching theme connected to ANZAC Day, with students creating thoughtful and reflective poems.

“I liked learning about the Haiku poems because they have a cool layout,” (Florence, 3C).

In Numeracy, students have been learning about angles. Throughout the week, they explored the features of right, acute (less than a right angle) and obtuse angles (greater than a right angle). We focused on using correct mathematical vocabulary to describe and compare angles, and students enjoyed hunting for angles both inside and outside the classroom.

“My favourite part about angles was that we got to hunt for them around the class and school, and now I know that a right angle is the shape of an L,” (Paddy C, 3C)

We are looking forward to camp at the end of the term, along with many more engaging learning experiences ahead.
