What has been happening in Year 1?
Term 1 Week 7
In Science, Year 1 have been exploring different materials. Last Thursday, Mr Tasker visited our class to teach us about the materials used in bridge building. We learned about different types of bridges, including beam bridges, cable-stayed bridges, truss bridges and the most exciting one - a bridge that opens up to let large ships pass underneath!
We also discovered how triangles are often used in bridge design because they add strength and stability. To get into the spirit of real bridge builders, we even dressed up in safety gear, just like the professionals.
Armed with our new knowledge, we had a fantastic time building our own bridges and testing their strength with weights. Some held up impressively, while others collapsed under pressure - but that was all part of the fun and learning!
In our Year 1D class, we have been exploring The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, a beautiful story that teaches us about sharing and kindness. We connected this story to our understanding of God and how He created each of us in His image, unique and special, just like the Rainbow Fish and his shimmering scales. To bring our learning to life, we used various mediums such as paint, collage, and pastels to create a stunning mixed-media artwork that reflects the story’s themes. Additionally, we incorporated QR codes into our display - scan them to hear us read the story in our own voices! Come visit 1D to experience our creative journey firsthand.
In Year 1D, we have been learning all about safety in health, with a special focus on Healthy Harold. We have been exploring ways to stay safe both inside and outside, including how to make good choices to protect ourselves and others. As part of our learning, we visited the pick-up area at school to understand road safety better. We looked at different road signs, learned what they mean, and discussed why following the rules helps keep everyone safe. This activity helped us see the importance of being aware of our surroundings and making safe choices near roads.
