Hello from 6K

What a great start to the term 6K have had! This term, our History focus is the significant events that have shaped Australia. Throughout the term, students will explore key moments in our nation's past, including British colonisation, the Gold Rush, the Eureka Stockade, Federation, post-World War II migration, the 1967 Referendum, and the Mabo Decision.

By examining these important events, students are developing a deeper understanding of Australia's history and how these moments have influenced the country we live in today.

Each week, students complete a deep dive into one historical event by exploring a range of carefully selected resources, answering comprehension and inquiry questions, and creating an informative Canva poster. This project not only strengthens their historical knowledge but also allows them to develop their digital technology skills as they design engaging and impactful posters that effectively summarise the key information from each topic. In 6K, we are creating a timeline of these events on our window, come in and have a look!

Students have been also taking a deep dive into the 1967 Referendum, one of the most significant milestones in Australia's history. Through this unit, students are exploring the events leading up to the referendum, what occurred during the campaign and vote, and the changes and ongoing impact that followed.

As part of their learning, students are developing an understanding of the experiences of First Nations Australians, including the discrimination and inequalities they faced as a result of past laws and government policies. They have examined the efforts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their allies who worked tirelessly to advocate for change, leading to the historic referendum in which an overwhelming 90.77% of Australians voted "Yes" to amend the Australian Constitution.

To demonstrate their understanding, students are researching a range of primary and secondary sources, and conducting note-taking, before planning and writing a factual recount that explores the events Before, During and After the referendum.

These topics have sparked brilliant conversations in 6K and every student has deepened their knowledge on First Nations Australian’s history.
